Reform success dependent on improving lives

SANE Australia welcomes the Federal Government taking leadership on mental health reform but the real test is whether the lives of Australians affected by mental illness will be improved.

It is essential that there are measures and indicators that can track whether or not the reforms are delivering better mental health outcomes for individuals.

"It's not about the number of services or consultations, it's about reaching more people and improving more lives and the lives of those who love them," says Jack Heath, SANE Australia CEO.

"Late help is always expensive help, connecting with people early on saves dollars and saves lives."

The Government's increased focus on digital technology to deliver support is vital, especially for those people living in rural and regional communities who do not have ready access to mental health services.

"We look forward to expanding the reach of peer to peer support services like the SANE Forums that harness the underutilised resource of people's lived experience of mental illness, across the community," says Heath.

As we embark on this period of major structural reform, we must ensure that people in need are supported while the reforms are implemented.

SANE Australia stands committed to ensuring that all Australians affected by mental illness lead a better life.
