A message from your Commodore

Ahoy Sequoia,

I wanted to send a personal message to all of the members.  Many of you may be at the Installation dinner on Saturday but obviously not all so hence my message.

My thanks to ALL of you for a great year. The club is going from strength to strength and it is a credit to all of you. We set out with clear objectives.  I was confident in these objectives because of the strong team that made it all happen but also because of all of the good work that occurred in previous years. A good year does not happen by accident - it is built on a strong foundation!

The year has seen a record in new members. It is also great to see so many younger members joining the club - this is important for our future.  Boating is the heart of the club and we have enjoyed a very strong sailing season with an exceptional beer can season. There was a lot of dedicated and hard work put forth to achieve this. We also celebrated the Garrett Horder award for the best Junior Sailing Program on the West Coast - a credit to the tremendous efforts by all in the JSP over many years!

The social scene continues to be vibrant with many very well organized and well-attended events.  This takes many to make it a success. We also hosted the PICYA dinner and meeting in April at our club.

The cruising camaraderie is clear and was even more special in a year where we had to improvise as many marinas were 'off limits' because of the America's Cup. We enjoyed a mega cruise in France with an amazing total of 80 participants.

We had the tremendous experience of the America's Cup and I was proud to see so many of our members volunteer - for stake boat duties, for the hospitality areas, and more.  And to have the privilege of having Sir Ben Ainslie at the club before all of the America's Cup racing excitemen,t was memorable especially as he had a big part in the Oracle racing team's turnaround.

Most of all, it is the energy in the club that is so good. Many have been to a beer can race on Wednesday nights - 30 boats was normal and we reached 35 often with a huge participation in the club afterwards - dinners for 80 to 100 were typical.  It should come as no surprise that after a year of this vibrant activity, the club finances are in great shape.

This is a journey, not a destination, and with the positive energy in the club, the can-do spirit, the strength to accept new ideas and a flag for 2014 which is very strong - I could not be happier.

Thanks to you all - Let's continue to take this club to new heights!

Peter - Your Commodore (for a few more days).

Winter Series Starts Saturday, November 9th

It's time for the light wind and calmer waters that make wintertime sailing fun in the South Bay!

The Sequoia Yacht Club 2014 Winter Series begins this Saturday, November 9 with Race #1.

This is a five-race series with one throw-out race. The start line for the Winter Series is at 3 - 4 and the start time is 13:30. All skippers should attend the skipper's meeting at 11:30 on the day of the race. Non-Sequoia members, unless you signed up & paid for the entire year, you should get their entry forms and fees to the club before the first race. For those boats coming down from CPYC, you can call me at 650-576-3990 after 11:45 for race instructions and then check-in at the start area. Plan on racing rain or shine.

If you haven't yet filled out a Skipper's Entry Form for 2014, please download it and fill it out before the race. Members of the crew are also required to fill out a 2014 Crew Registration Form. There are blank forms at the Club if you aren't able to download copies before Saturday.

Come on out for some great sailing. I'll look for you at the start line.

Thanksgiving Weekend Cruise-out

(Angel Island is still there; I just checked)

Hello Cruisers, Wanna bee's and Islanders,
And you know who you are.

Yes the long weekend cruise-out at Angel Island is November 28th thru December 1st.

Game Plan:

Thursday, the 28th.  Happy Thanksgiving!  For those of you who will be on the Island, please make sure that the island is clean and fully stocked by Friday for the rest of the fleet.

Friday, the 29th.  Snacks on top Mt. Livermore.  Oil-less turkey fry in the cove, with a big side of pot luck; don't forget the left overs.  There will be a best dressing/stuffing contest with prizes.

Saturday, the 30th.  The Island opens at 0800hr.  Breakfast in the cove featuring Barb's famous sausages.  Lunch in Tiburon with a scavenger hunt.  Yes, there will be prizes.

Dinner.........................this space was deliberately left blank.  Your cruise Captain needs some additional verification to pass along further information.

Sunday, December 1st.  Island opens at 0800hr.  Breakfast in the cove...........then yours truly will be sailing home.

A couple of Angel Island things.

It is an island, so getting lost is difficult.  If you do, there will be prizes. No dogs, only service animals are allowed on the Island.
No personal Segways on the island, sorry just leave yours at home.

There is ferry service to the island:

If you are looking for a ride, let me know and I will get you a ride.
If you are looking for a boat or a berth, let me know, as Captain I can make things happen. Plenty of hiking and bike trails.
Boats are not allowed in the slips after sunset. We will be using the mooring buoys.  Bring long lines to tie bow and stern.

There is a yellow sign-up sheet at the club. You can also let me know if you plan on going, need further information or are looking for a boat. Let me know if you will be coming with a dingy.  Dingy-less boaters can catch a ride for usually a beer or two.

2014 Cruise Out Season...

2012 Angel Island

Dinner on Angel Island

Lighted Boat Parade 2012

Boat Parade Encinal Yacht Club

Hello SYC!

I know you don't want to miss out on the cruising fun this year, and certainly not because you missed an announcement! So, let me start by reminding everyone, or showing the new members here, that our cruise out schedule for 2014 is already posted on the SYC website under the Events tab, and for ease, here's the direct link (consider saving a bookmark :-):

http://sequoiayc.org/cruising

That link is also where you can sign up on-line for cruise outs. When the cruise out is underlined in blue it's ready to link you to the sign up sheet. And our first two cruise out sign up sheets are now posted, ready for you to sign up! The other way to sign up is on the yellow sign up sheets that are posted in the club on the cruising bulletin board. Old school or new school, we support it all! Oh ya, if you don't see a leader's name listed yet next to the cruise out, I'm still looking for a leader; let me know!

Now, onto pressing business, our first two cruise outs of the 2014 cruising season are one week apart, and fast approaching! First, we have the Thanksgiving trip to Angel Island, immediately followed by, our trip to view the lighted boat parade at the Encinal YC. I've added teaser photos for both cruise outs (and yes, if you look closely, Tom is wearing a short sleeve shirt while moving Killin Time last year at Ayala Cove. And yes, on Thanksgiving last year the crew of Agave was wearing shorts! We've been incredibly lucky with weather the last couple of years on the Island, and cheers to it continuing!).

Last year we had 7 boats join us for the Angel Island cruise out. Already this year we have 7 boats signed up! Again this year Agave will make the trip up on Thanksgiving day and enjoy an amazing Thanksgiving dinner in Ayala Cove. Most of the boats will arrive on Friday and Tom has sent out details of our fun weekend on the island! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Tom (tomkeegan50@gmail.com) or me.

One week later we have the Encinal Lighted Boat cruise out, weekend of Dec 7th! Personally, I thought I knew what a lighted boat parade looked like until I first attended this cruise out - wow!! The boaters in this parade are serious about lighting their boats, and the weekend is great hanging out with the members of Encinal.  They have a fun club too! If you're motivated, you can enter the lighted boat parade too! (more info can be found here: (http://www.lightedyachtparade.com). If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact John Zolck, your cruise-out captain, at (Zolckfamily@gmail.com) or me.

See you on the water!

Shannon & Tod.
