Dear families,

Welcome to term two. As we honour our mothers this weekend, on behalf of the College I would like to recognise and congratulate year 1 teacher, Mrs Jeanette Binder, who recently gave birth to healthy daughter, Kayla Susie, born 15th April. Praise God!

On Friday the Early Learning Centre hosted a special Mother's Day pampering event. It was very well attended and both children and mums really seemed to enjoy the time together. Thank you to ELC staff for coordinating the event.

Yours sincerely

Derek Nicholls. Principal.

KINDERGARTEN Last week Kindergarten 1 went for a walk down to Raphael Park. On our way we were looking out for letters and numbers that we could see in the environment. The children observed letters and numerals on car license plates, signs and post boxes. As we walked many of us saw different kinds of animals. At first some of these were difficult to see, but Mrs Huxley reminded us to look carefully. After closing our eyes and listening we opened our eyes and found our senses were heightened. Suddenly, we could see things that seemed hidden in a forest of grass and trees. We would like to say thank you to all the parents that came along and helped us search. Mrs Huxley.

PRE-PRIMARY During the last fortnight the Pre-primary children have been continuing their learning of Number. The children have enjoyed many activities focusing on the number 10, including writing numbers to 10 and finding 10 different items around the classroom. In Science, the children have been learning about things necessary to stay alive; in addition, they enjoyed sorting objects according to whether they are needs or wants. We have also learnt about the 5 senses and how they help us to learn. Last Monday we were lucky enough to have a visit from students from St George’s College. The children got to read book and engage in activities with the older students.           Miss Baker and Mrs Stein.

YEAR 1 ‘Anzac Day is special because the people in the war saved Australia.  People are sad because the soldiers died in the war.  The soldiers were put in the tomb or they were buried in the sand with the poppies and the crosses.  Anzac was on the 25th of April.  The people felt brave and afraid.  Some of the people did not die.’

- Ricardo Lau, Year 1.2

On the first day back at school, the year 1 students received a letter from palaeontologist, “Dr Bronte Sore”, from the “Dinosaur Discovery Centre” inviting them to look after a recently found dinosaur egg.  Students brainstormed ideas which would persuade Dr Bronte Sore why they should look after it.  They sent letters replying to the palaeontologist giving reasons such as; we are very responsible, we have had experience looking after chicken eggs, and we are learning about dinosaurs this term so it would be very exciting and informative.  The students are waiting a reply from Dr Bronte Sore.  Stay tuned for more details!

CLASS 2.1 On the first day of school the students were given a Science and Technology challenge, which was to create a path to slow the descent of a standard marble, as much as possible. The students worked well together, designing and constructing their Slo-mos. It was challenging; however, the students demonstrated perseverance when things didn’t go according to their plan. There were problems to solve and most of the students completed the challenge in the required time, and were able to slow the descent of a marble.

Last week, students from both year 2 classes enjoyed Science activities testing push forces and gravity; in particular, feeling the difference as a ball is pushed into water and describing how the water behaved.

Mrs Jenkins.

CLASSES 2/3 and 3.1 Our term started with an incursion called “Larfalot’s Letter”.   A teacher from the Constitutional Centre of WA taught us how voting takes place. We had fun taking turns using the hand puppets.

For our “Wow” day on our topic “Flame Keepers”, we chatted about traditions in our families and how we pass them on from generation to generation.   We then read a dreamtime story which taught us to never leave a small child alone.  We also got to toast some marshmallows on the fire – yummy!

Fire is part of our theme so we were treated to a visit from the Kensington Fire Department who taught us all about fire safety in the home.

Mrs Ellis, Mrs Wilkinson and Mrs Innes

CLASS 4.1 Term 2 has really started with a bang for the Year 4s, with our LEGOmotion Discovery theme, and being responsible for the ANZAC service.  Preparation for the service began last term with the organisation of our whole-school Art installation, Field of Remembrance, and our ANZAC writing competition.  The whole school attended the service with a very tangible sense of gratitude and understanding of the importance of such an occasion.  Every member of our community can be proud of our students and their ability to conduct themselves in such a respectful manner.  The Year 4s understood the great responsibility of leading their fellow students in the ANZAC service and we are very proud of the manner in which they conducted themselves.  In addition, many of the Year 4 girls are in the choir which lead the singing during the service. Mrs Johnston.

PEACE TO AUSTRALIA by Declan Short (Class 4.1)

Soldiers fought for Australia far away,

Bombs and guns went off all day.

Tents zipped up for the night,

Cannon balls fly with fire for the fight.

So here now safe from war we keep,

The trumpet plays while soldiers sleep.

Bang! They go when they hit the ground,

Fire forms the heat, toward the enemy bound.

The war goes on for months and years,

Soldiers shot, wounded, death, tears.

They fight for Australia, never to give up or yield

Peace to Australia while soldiers are dead in Flanders Field.

CLASS 5/6 On Monday the 2nd of May the year 5/6 River Rangers went to the Perth Hills discovery Centre to help build 2 parrot boxes,  2 medium marsupial boxes,  2 cockatoo boxes and a bat box. We then got to see some of our boxes being placed up in the surrounding trees. Mr Tracy

LOTE Italian Years 4-6 have been using iPads in Italian to make movies and animations. The devices are wonderful for the students as they have an opportunity to use spoken Italian for their tasks.

The students in year 4 are photographing Lego characters in front of photos of famous places in Italy. These photos will be used to make an iMovie about the Lego characters visiting Italy.

Mrs Kerrigan.

98.5FM Last week the Year 1 classes had a visit by Corey from radio station 98.5FM. The purpose was to record responses from students for a series of upcoming segments on their morning radio program. Further details of the program will be shared in coming weeks.

PERTH GLORY DEVELOPMENT This term, 35 students are meeting for four consecutive Monday afternoons at Raphael Park to develop their soccer skills. This will happen under the direction of members of the Perth Glory Development Squad.

In addition to this, the newly formed Regent Kings (Year 5/6 students) played their first game of soccer against the Rehoboth team Tyndale at Thomas Moore Park in Wilson. The game was played in the afternoon at 3.45pm and conditions were a little slippery due to the light rain falling just before kick-off. The Regent Kings showed great teamwork and soccer skills which helped them to secure the game winning 5-1. Their next game is on Friday the 20th of May at 3.45pm. Go Regent Kings!

ST GEORGE'S ANGLICAN GRAMMAR Last week the ELC (kindergarten and pre-primary) enjoyed a visit from 20 students from St George's Anglican Grammar. They spent time together reading books and playing games. Thank you to St George for the time of community.
