These funds will assist Fight Cancer Foundation and its partners, Rotary Club of Albury North, Lions District 201V6 and the Zonta Club of Albury Wodonga to expand the Hilltop accommodation centre for cancer patients to meet growing community needs. The expansion will increase the capacity of Hilltop by 3,650 guest nights each year and will help reduce the physical, emotional and financial stress associated with cancer for those who must travel to access treatment. HELPING YOUNG PEOPLE WITH CANCER GET BACK ON TRACK Tamara was at a pivotal point of high school when she was diagnosed with cancer. Nearly a year in hospital meant she missed out on crucial time in the classroom. Tamara’s mum Suzie, has shared a heart-warming message, highlighting the impact our education support program had on Tamara. “The 12 months Tamara spent in hospital were extremely difficult times for us but we also have some beautiful memories from amazing, selfless individuals like Trisha Donovan (teacher) who we will always be grateful to. She was able to lift Tamara’s spirits and gave her encouragement to find her passion in life.” We're pleased to share Tamara was able to complete Year 11 and has started Year 12 this year. In 2019, Fight Cancer Foundation is celebrating its 30th anniversary. To commemorate, we will be sharing historical milestones in each issue of our E-News. ESTABLISHMENT OF THE BMDI CORD BLOOD BANK In September 1996, Fight Cancer Foundation (then Bone Marrow Donor Institute) established the BMDI Cord Blood Bank. It was only the second public cord blood bank in Australia. Working closely with the Australian Bone Marrow Donor Registry, the BMDI Cord Blood Bank sources and provides cord blood for patients needing a stem cell transplant for treatment of blood cancers and other life-threatening illnesses. Since 1996 13,905 cord blood units have been banked. Of the banked units, 559 have been released, providing a second chance at life for people around the world. The BMDI Cord Blood Bank operates as a partnership between Fight Cancer Foundation, the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute and The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne. Fight Cancer Foundation relies on your support to help people living with cancer and their families. To get in touch, please contact us. |
