5th Week Workshop Classes:
Shim Sham & Tranky Doo

THE SHIM SHAM

March has five Wednesdays in it, and you know what it means -- special workshop classes! We're excited to learn two of the most performed routines among Lindy Hoppers -- the Shim Sham, and the Tranky Doo. Our classes for each of the routines will be two hours long (with a short break in the middle); you're welcome to sign up for both hours, or just for a half of it. Please note that 5th week classes are not included in your series registrations; all sign-ups will be drop-ins at the door.

The Shim Sham w/ Doug & Andrew (7:15pm - 9:15pm)

The ultimate classic in solo jazz routines for Lindy Hoppers! Originally a routine for tap dancers, the swing dance world quickly appropriated it with simplified footwork and many different versions by famous dancers. Over the course of two hours, you will learn the entire classic shim sham routine originally given to us by jazz dancer great, Frankie Manning, as well as some variations to add your own special flavor. Enroll in both class slots for the whole deal, or only take one to focus on the half that befuddles you.

The Tranky Doo w/ Margot & Katie (7:15pm - 9:15pm)

Come learn the entire Tranky Doo solo routine in two hours! This playful and intriguing dance is named after a famous chorus girl and will challenge your rhythm, teach you new moves, and improve your solo movement. Enroll in back to back class slots for the entire routine, or only one class slot for the half that befuddles you the most.

Learn any of these popular routines, then join the crowd and show off your stuff during the dance!

Level 1 (8:15pm - 9:15pm)
w/ Shannon & Gilles
8-Count Lindy Hop

(Note: we have added a second 8-count Lindy Hop class series to our level 1 curriculum.)

When you really want to dig that swing beat, there’s nothing like 8-count Lindy Hop! We will start with the basics, from zero dance experience on up, and get you swinging around the dance floor in no time! This is a progressive 4-week class; show up on the first week to get maximum benefit.

PRE-REQUISITES: None. No partner required; just bring your enthusiasm and comfortable clothes!

SHANNON LEA WATKINS & GILLES BOUVIER

Level 2 (7:15pm - 8:15pm)
w/ Shannon & Gilles
6 & 8 Counts Remixed

When the worlds of 8- and 6-count swing collide, amazing dancing results! Join us in learning some of the classic and awesome 6/8 count moves you see on the dance floor. You might think we'll be baking, with moves that include words like "roll" and "sugar", and you won't be far off as we explore the recipe for mixing them into more texture-rich dancing!

PRE-REQUISITES: Level 1A-C; twice through recommended. Execute a swingout, lindy circle, charleston and 6-count moves and transition between them in open and closed positions. No partner required, just bring your enthusiasm!

Level 3 (7:15pm - 8:15pm)
w/ Ellen & Paul
Fast Charleston

Fasten your seatbelts, and prepare to hit the track: charleston shines when in its native element...the raceway. This series focuses on advanced charleston technique, allowing clear and efficient leading and following at fast tempos, giving you the skills (and figures) to evolve your social dance game. These techniques apply to standard-tempos as well, so this class is for you if you're looking to speed things up, or looking to enhance your general charleston understanding!

PRE-REQUISITES: At least nine consecutive months of Level 1 and Level 2 including one full year of social dance, or discuss your eligibility with instructors.  Under-qualified students will be asked to transfer to Level 2 in order to strengthen their fundamentals.

ELLEN HUFFMAN & PAUL CSONKA

Elective (8:15pm - 9:15pm)
w/ Katie & Chris
Balboa Basics

Originating in the Balboa Peninsula of Orange County, Balboa combines intricate footwork with smooth body movement, to create a dynamic and fast-paced dance that is fun to watch but even more fun to do!  Great for beginners or if you have taken Balboa Fundamentals.  This class will add on basic vocabulary to your Pure Bal and Bal-Swing foundations.

PRE-REQUISITES: 3 months of Level 1 and/or Balboa Fundamentals. No partner required; just bring your enthusiasm and comfortable clothes!

KATIE O'NEILL & CHRIS ENRIQUEZ

April 6: WNH Anniversary w/ Clint Baker's New Orleans Jazz Band

CLINT BAKER'S NEW ORLEANS JAZZ BAND

WNH is turning 11! Over the years, we grew from a very small venue to a pretty large one; we changed locations across three different cities; the dancers, the volunteers, the organizers came and went; but what has stayed the same is the sense of a welcoming, friendly community, and amazing fun! Come celebrate with us to Clint Baker's NOJB, and take a picture in a photo booth!
