Canadian Philanthropy
COVID-19 Response:
Key Findings
How are Canadian foundations and funders responding to COVID-19? Philanthropy in Canada is undergoing a major shift in response to the pandemic and many funders have adapted to this crisis and adjusted their support to grantees. To capture this response, we have been collecting data with the help of Grantbook to produce an interactive mapping tool that will provide a snapshot of activities and funding gaps and which will enable collaboration between funders. One of the key findings from June 2020 tells us that $99.5 million was committed in response to COVID-19 out of the 50 funders who responded to the survey. For the next iteration, we are inviting all members of the Canadian philanthropic and grantmaking communities to complete/update a 10-minute survey on how your organization has adapted its activities and funding to respond to COVID-19.

Systemic Racism and Philanthropy:
From Naming to Action
In his latest blog, Jean-Marc Mangin, President and CEO of PFC, reflects on the much-needed conversations on systemic racism and long-standing disparities in our society brought forward by the ongoing Black Lives Matter movement against police brutality and racial violence in the U.S. as well as Canada. Philanthropy For Protests Against Racial Injustice Are Pouring In
The death of George Floyd was a call for action: to reform, to protest and, for many, to write a check. A GoFundMe campaign created by Floyd’s brother Philonise has received $14 million from almost 500,000 people, a record for the most individual donations on the platform. Many celebrities and public figures have also rallied to help and support the families and victims of police brutality and to fight racial injustice. For many, however, how and where to give right now can be overwhelming and confusing.

Corporations Get Cozy with Police Foundations under Cover of Philanthropy
With increasing calls for police accountability and an end to militarization of the police, new reports have raised concerns about corporate money flowing to private police foundations in the U.S., which enables them to purchase extra surveillance technology and weaponry that is not funded, approved, or monitored by the public. It is time for the nonprofit, philanthropic and government sector to step up and limit the police foundation as a workaround to avoid public governance.

Community Organizations: Time To Dust Off The Funding
Quebec has slowly developed a system of support for community organizations to address a wide variety of social problems. A Look Into The Giving of Ultra-high-net-worth Individuals
The Milken Institute Center for Strategic Philanthropy released a new report analysing the state of ultra-high-net-worth (UHNW) philanthropy, highlighting that much-needed capital remains accessible but unspent. Currently only 36% of UHNW individuals with more than $US30 million in net assets are engaged in philanthropy and under 10% have made a charitable donation of $US1 million or larger.
