My warmest welcome to both new University of Canterbury (UC) students and those who have returned to UC to recommence study, haere mai, tauti mai ki te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha! Thank you for choosing UC! We are delighted to have you here in Christchurch, within the takiwā of Ngāi Tūāhuriri and Ngāi Tahu whānui. You will hear a lot about success at University being directly tied to the commitment and engagement of students. This is not to be ignored, it is based on evidence, such as needing to participate in lectures, tutorials and study. You have chosen Canterbury to study at and in doing so we are committed to supporting your decision and your success. We want to support you with your valued time at the University of Canterbury, so please DO NOT hesitate to make contact – we are here to help. We believe this is an informal agreement, we need you to commit to seeking our support and development opportunities for realising your goals. Maintaining your focus on your long-term goals is also important – we want you to succeed, complete your programme of study and enjoy your achievement. Please take advantage of all the activities and opportunities that UC has to offer. To our new ākonga, your first year at UC is a very important step in your journey to achieving your goals and building your future. My colleagues in the Māori Development Team (MDT), staff across the University, and I, are committed to supporting your success and development. I strongly encourage you to make contact with the Māori Development Team, establish a relationship with the team, it WILL enhance your student experience and provide opportunities to develop your leadership capabilities. Nāhaku noa, nā Darryn Russell Calling all First Year students!The Māori Development Team will be reaching out to all new Māori students to check up on and see how you are settling in here at UC. These will begin in week 3 and will aim towards making the transition to life on campus smoother. Celebration for Māori Congratulations to all those who graduated in December 2016, it was an honor to celebrate with you and your whānau. Come and collect your Pēke! If you are a first year student at UC and haven't collected your pēke, come to our new home located on the first floor of Te Ao Mārama, meet your advisor and pick up a pēke loaded with plenty of resources to help make your year at UC a success. Whakapiri On Thursday the 9th of March between 11am and 3pm, the Māori Development Team will be hosting an event at Te Ao Mārama to re-connect with all students! There will be lunch from 11am-1pm, but activities will run all day. There will be kai, music, fun activities and most importantly lots of people! Haere mai! Join the Tuākana - Tēina Programme The Tuākana - Tēina Programme connects tēina (first year students) with high achieving tuākana (senior students), who can provide information about UC, the support services available and general academic guidance. This includes workshops on EndNote, Keeping Up to Date with Research, Research Data Management and Word for Long Documents. A full programme of Library research support classes can be found and applied for here. Academic Skills Centre: Effective Note-Taking Due to popular demand, another session of Effective Note-taking has been added to Monday, 13 March at 12 noon. We encourage students who are having difficulties with keeping up with lectures to attend, and acquire some new skills for taking comprehensive notes during lectures. More info can be found here. Te Ratonga Ākonga Māori - Māori Development Team The Māori Development Team (MDT) works collaboratively with academic department and service centres to assist ākonga Māori to have success at UC. Pānui from the CommunityStudent Volunteer Army - The Big Give As part of UCSA Orientation on 4th March 2017 the UC Student Volunteer Army is heading to South New Brighton, Christchurch, to carry out a large scale volunteering event called the SVA Big Give. This event is expected to gather over 1000 UC students, community members, sponsors, politicians including the Mayor of Christchurch, to help restore, repair and remove damage done to the Rocking Horse Road Spit. A community lunch will be put on along with live music from kiwi musicians to round out the day! For more information visit the SVA's facebook page or there website. Ngāi Tahu Scholarships Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, Ngāi Tahu Holdings and Ngāi Tahu Property are currently offering scholarships/cadetship opportunities to Ngāi Tahu tertiary students who are currently studying at all graduate levels, the closing date for these scholarships is March 17th. Ngāi Tahu / Beca Scholarship - open to Ngāi Tahu students studying engineering, architecture, planning, resource management, landscape and urban design, environmental or other related fields. Pūmanawa Scholarship & Matakahi Scholarship - open to Ngāi Tahu students studying commerce – primarily (but not limited to) information technology, finance, accounting, marketing, management, law or property.

Fulbright New Zealand calls for applications to a range of awards for New Zealand academics, artists, teachers and professionals to undertake academic and cultural exchanges to the United States of America. The 2017 Māori Education Trust (MET) scholarship round is now open, there a number of different scholarships open for application that suit both Undergraduates and Postgraduate. The closing date for the majority of these scholarships is on the 31st of March. Pegasus Health Workforce Development Scholarships 2017 Scholarships are now available for Christchurch-based tertiary institution students who are studying a health-related NZQA accredited course, are from a Māori, Pacific or Culturally and Linguistically Diverse background and planning to work in the Canterbury region.
