Need space for remote work or learning? The PNA will be using our rental spaces differently this fall to support the community during COVID-19, whether for remote work or learning. We’re renting to groups needing half-day, full-day, weekly, and monthly rental spaces at the Phinney Center (click here for a room example) or at the Sunset Hill Community Association clubhouse (upper hall or lower hall) starting in September. Outdoors-only rentals are also an option. Email Georgette and Eric at rentals@phinneycenter.org for info!
Senior Pen Pals Needed! Want to receive some fun letters in the mail and help kids learn the craft of communicating via snail mail? Join the PNA's Pen Pal Project, which currently needs more senior participants. Click here for information on how to get matched with a pen pal.
Call for PNA Board Board Members! The PNA is seeking candidates for its Board of Directors and we would love to hear from you. We are looking for community members who are passionate about the PNA’s mission to build community, and who are excited to envision and strategize organizational change / programmatic transformation to respond to the pandemic as well as our accelerated effort to become a more diverse and inclusive organization by bringing an equity lens to all that we do. We are looking for people with backgrounds in organizational change/change management toward diversity, equity, and inclusion; law; nonprofit
management; finance; and/or fundraising. The PNA needs board members who understand or have a lived experience that can inform our work in diversity, equity, and inclusion. People of color and those representing the diversity of our community are encouraged to apply. Board members serve 1- to 3-year terms, starting in January, and generally spend 5 to 8 hours per month on board and committee business and supporting activities. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis; preference for the 2021 term will be given for candidates who apply by September 30, 2020. For more information or to apply, please email pna@phinneycenter.org.
Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion updateOur Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) work continues, with our committee meeting weekly and collaborating online. The Board recently resolved to make the committee a permanent structure of the organization, committing to make ongoing EDI work part of the fabric of the PNA. We are actively searching out an expert consultant to guide us. The Board has also committed to participating in racial literacy study groups, starting in September 2020. Recently, the PNA made some difficult decisions that addressed imagery that
could be interpreted in a racially negative way. We removed a secondary water fountain in the Phinney Center that had presented to some as a legacy of racial segregation. We retired the Holiday Monkey Lights because of the extended history of monkeys being used as a racist symbol, with Black people being derogatorily referred to as monkeys symbolically and in language. We recognize that the loss of the monkeys has felt like a big disappointment to many in the neighborhood, but we plan to work with businesses and neighbors to find a new symbol of community and joy in 2021. Tool Library re-opening August 29! We are excited to announce we will open our Tool Library doors on Saturdays from 9 -11 am, starting on August 29! We are working to make our space safe, and our program sustainable, and appreciate your support as we figure things out. Current PNA members, ages 18 and over, can borrow tools for a week at a time for a nominal fee ($1 to 10 per tool per week), with the potential for renewal, depending on demand. Our inventory is mostly available for viewing online, and we will be working to ensure it is up-to-date as we get more familiar with everything stashed in the nooks and crannies of the Tool Library. Wearing a clean mask and sanitizing your hands are required for entry, and we will be limiting the number of people in our space at any given time. We will expand our hours as our volunteer staff and demand increases, and we encourage anyone with a borrowed item to please return it on the 29th, if possible. Wanna help?
