Welcome to Term Four! A very happy World Teachers' Day to you all, and what a year the worlds' teachers and educators have had! The MoAD Learning team have put together a thank-you clip below which we hope you enjoy, and this issue is jam-packed with resources, news and ideas to support you in your fabulous work with young people. The ACT has been in lockdown since August 13, and our team has been busy delivering programs from home and creating more beautiful resources to support you and your students. We have connected with record numbers of classes for Democracy: Our House, Our Voices and our You, Me and Sustainability program, our DART Learning Virtual Week in Canberra special, as well as hundreds of teachers in professional development workshops. Media Literacy Week is coming up! From October 25-30 we will be celebrating the ways we can create media, use media to be informed, and be critical consumers of media. Do your students know what questions to ask to check if a source is reliable? Are there any budding journalists in your class who need a media literacy super boost to make sure they are checking their facts before putting their story out there? We are here to help! Keep an eye on our twitter page and website as we will be releasing some new Media Literacy resources. We are also beyond excited to announce our very special collaboration with the National Film and Sound Archive: Media and Me! Read on for more details. Stay safe everyone, MoAD Learning Tell Dr Keith Heggart what you know! Are you a citizenship educator working in schools or in galleries, libraries or museums? Do you have an interest in teaching young people to become active and informed members of their community? If that’s the case, we would love to hear from you. Dr Keith Heggart (from UTS) is undertaking research into the beliefs and practices of educators around Australia in schools and also in other sectors. He is interested in talking about good - and bad - examples of civics and citizenship education. If this sounds like something you are interested in, he would like to talk to you. Lifelong LearnersThe entire MoAD Learning Team on a recent professional development excursion to Australia's Parliament House. History of the buildingWe love stories from history that need a little bit of detective work... Our podcast series: Ladies in the House by the brilliant Kelly Chase is a partnership between The History Detective and MoAD Learning. The series is reflective of our love of history, and of our fascinating building. These podcasts also showcase strong historical inquiry skills and make an excellent exemplar of the importance of researching widely and thinking critically. Lately we have been learning about how to enrich our digital programs using targeted questioning and inquiry techniques. If you are curious about learning more about inquiry learning, or looking for some inspiration for your classroom, this STEMed podcast episode Unpacking Inquiry Learning with Trevor Mackenzie is a terrific place to start. Media Literacy and Critical Thinking Skills - Political CartooningHow many ways could your students engage with the Cathy Wilcox cartoon above? Political cartoons are a great way to develop your students’ media literacy skills and understanding of the world around them. They make great hooks or creative writing stimuli. Political cartoon analysis also develops critical thinking skills and helps students understand the ways in which we can exercise our democratic rights and freedoms, and the responsibilities that come with being an active citizen. The value of digital excursionsWere your students part of the 12,500 students who connected with us for the DART Learning Virtual Week in Canberra? The week included programs from our friends in the Canberra Cultural Institutions and was a rich digital experience for students who couldn't come to Canberra for their trip this year. You might also have seen our very own Steph Smith on the news, explaining how digital excursions not only provide access to ational cultural spaces for regional and remote students, they also allow the smaller libraries, museums and art galleries across Australia to deliver programs online and connect with students. The recording of our session is available on YouTube and has so far had over twelve thousand views. We're always happy to help if you'd like to find out more about digital excursions; whether it's how to get started, which program is right for you, or how to create the best learning experience for your students. Contact us: digitalexcursions@moadoph.gov.au What else do we have for you?Classroom-ready: Who am I?This Civics in Pictures resource uses the beautiful Who am I? by Philip Bunting, and encourages students to learn more about themselves through reflection and art. This visual media activity encourages students to be reflective and evaluative, and would be a terrific end of the year activity for unpacking growth and change, personal pride and confidence, and leadership attributes.
