KAUST's fifth academic year is in full swing with 740 MS and PhD students, 117 faculty members, over 340 postdocs, and almost 240 scientists and engineers working and discovering on campus. The 2013-14 academic year began with President Jean-Lou Chameau delivering the keynote address at Convocation, reaffirming the University's shared goals.

President Chameau Speaks at Inaugural Times Higher Education World Academic Summit

At the 2013 Times Higher Education (THE) World Academic Summit where where the 2013-2014 THE World University Rankings was formally launched, President Chameau shares, “THE’s rankings spotlight the elite’s success; however, it should be noted that their impact is enabled by a larger and complex educational ecosystem in which the institutions not only support industry and educate a highly qualified workforce, but also lead innovation and create new industries themselves.”

Micro-sized Microbial Fuel Cells: Small Solutions for Large Challenges

In a paper recently published in the high-impact journal ACS Nano, PhD student Justine Mink and supervisor Dr. Muhammad Mustafa Hussain, Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering, examined microbial fuel cells (MFCs), a promising alternative energy source with the ability to generate electricity and purify water.

Academic Convocation 2013

On September 3, President Jean-Lou Chameau gave the keynote address for Convocation 2013, reaffirming the University's shared goals. Other speakers included student speaker Hatoon Baazim (MS '13) and faculty speaker Michael Berumen, Assistant Professor of Marine Science.

Red Sea Research Vessel Arrives

KAUST has recently acquired Saudi Arabia's first research vessel, R/V Thuwal. "This vessel will help bolster innovative research and knowledge of this largely unexplored resource at our doorstep," shared President Jean-Lou Chameau. "Our scientists and students are now equipped to explore the Red Sea aboard the R/V Thuwal with greater flexibility and access."

iDive Hackathon 2013

The team behind the Seed Fund winning project, iDive, headed by Prof. Michael Berumen of the KAUST Red Sea Research Center, held a weekend-long hackathon earlier this month in San Francisco. As part of the Scubahack event, around twenty developers gathered to brainstorm and work on iOS applications specifically for scuba diving with the iDive housing device.

Start-Up Story: Makkah Window

Makkah Window, a new start-up company incubated at the Entrepreneurship Center at KAUST as a new venture, is on its way. Using funding it received as a winner of the Fall 2012 Seed Fund Competition, the founders have turned their idea for the project into a technological company. The result: The company has released its first app for android devices, which provides interactive media and information on the history of the Holy city of Makkah.

Third International Research Poster Competition for Undergraduates

This competitive research poster event is part of the University’s Winter Enrichment Program, being held this year from January 12-30, 2014. Authors of the top 50 accepted abstracts will be invited to spend one week at KAUST between January 19-23 to present their research poster and to participate in an exciting international program.

MoU Signed with the Australian Centre for Plant Functional Genomics to Deliver Salt Tolerant Crops

KAUST and The Australian Centre for Plant Functional Genomics (ACPFG) at the University of Adelaide in Waite, Australia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), an agreement that will deliver salt-tolerant varieties of wheat and barley for the benefit of both the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Australian growers.

Prof. Gnanou Awarded France's Legion d'Honneur

Professor Yves Gnanou, Dean of the Division of Physical Sciences and Engineering, has joined the elite ranks of the French Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur (or the National Order of the Legion of Honor).
