Key Messages Week 6 - Term 4In and Around the School Senior Drama Performance of Nowhere Land to Holy Spirit’s Year 1 Student's As part of their final assessment for this Semester, the Years 11/12 Drama class were required to devise a performance for a target audience in the genre of children’s theatre. The class has been working with one particular Year 1 class to develop a unique storyline with engaging characters. This creative journey came to fruition on Friday. One hundred Year 1 Holy Spirit students trekked to the JPC Theatre to be greeted by a Fairy Godmother with a magical fairytale book. As the story began, the clumsy Fairy Godmother dropped the book, spilling the all pages. With the audience’s help of “shake, shake, shake”, more magical characters fell out of the book, onto the stage! The mixed-up characters’ journeys began here, where they needed to find a way back to their original stories. The Mad Hatter, Scarecrow and Lion tried to find the Wizard of Oz as they walked through the audience, questioning if anyone was a Wizard. Tweedle Dumb and Tinkerbell set off to solve the problem but weren’t successful. The Wicked Witch of the West and the Queen of Hearts decided to work together, as “two villains are better than one” to attempt to steal Tinkerbell’s magic! Tweedle Dee and Wendy, tried to found a portal which revealed that the Fairy Godmother was actually Captain Hook in disguise! The collection of characters had to work together to stop evil Captain Hook and discovered that friendship and cooperation allows them to achieve their goal. All characters were returned to their original books and, we assume, lived happily ever after! The Year 1 students cheered, clapped and actively participated during the performance. As they left, they were able to get some hugs and high-fives from their favourite characters. A lively and memorable performance was presented in Nowhere Land. Thank you to Jordan Skerritt who was the lighting technician. Chookas to all the performers! Mrs Sarah Smith Senior Drama Teacher Spotlight Shines On Student Talent Friday lunch marked the debut performance of the Spotlight Musical Theatre Club with a full house! The audience was taken on a musical mashup journey enjoying numbers from a range of musicals. From popular children’s classic The Lion King, to Broadway’s Jekyll and Hyde and Les Miserables, and going out with a bang to rock musical We Will Rock You, there was something for everyone in the 15 minute, power-packed performance. Going beyond the typical musical skills of singing and dancing, students showcased their physical skills in this performance in order to bring each musical number to life. They were soaring through the air in The Circle of Life, lifting ensemble members to create climactic moments. They were bringing sass with skipping rope aerobics in Whipped into Shape, and what’s a musical without a power moment with an ensemble strutting their stuff in a sixties-style bopper like Mean Green Mother From Outta Space? The energy in the room from both Spotlighters and the audience was palpable. A semester long commitment from students, the enthusiasm, passion and drive demonstrated by this group of performers translated onto the stage every time they rehearsed. Preparation began at the start of semester, with students engaging in performance, movement and singing workshops every Thursday afternoon. They were often challenged by the myriad of skills their teachers were trying to very quickly establish and develop in them. They met those challenges with the attitudes befitting Arts students; the confidence that anything is possible. A huge congratulations to the whole ensemble and sincerest thanks to parents who have supported them this semester with the 5pm pick-ups. It is incredibly motivating to be able to teach students outside the classroom, with so much enthusiasm for the Arts. Miss Kathryn Allan, Mrs Sarah Smith and Miss Chloe McCallum Vinnies Christmas Appeal Every year we take the time to consider how blessed we are and how we can help those in our area who are finding it tough. As in previous years, JPC will be supporting the Vinnies Christmas Appeal by creating Christmas Hampers to donate. Students in each PC group will be asked to donate and collect selected foods items, which we then organise into hampers. These hampers are delivered to families in our local community who are in need. We look forward to the continued support of all the families in our JPC community to make this a special Christmas for all.
Alison Middleton Defence NewsStudents Visit SFX On Tuesday a small group of Defence students visited St Francis Xavier College in Florey, where they met up with the Defence students from Merici and SFX. After introductions, the students used their creative skills by making Christmas cards which lit up with colourful bulbs. The student then joined forces and played the game of Tchoukball. A delicious lunch of nachos and pizza was served in the SFX Canteen with some more time for all the students to connect with each other and make new friends. Thanks to Mrs Slack from SFX for arranging the day and providing the bus and lunch for us. We had a great time.
