What happened in November

Last month more work areas were opened throughout the site with a specific focus around the Maunganui-Girven intersection.

This work included:

  • Removal of the raised median islands south of the Maunganui-Girven intersection and replacing with asphalt.
  • Shifting and narrowing the Tauranga-bound lanes on SH2, and installing temporary barriers and new line marking.
  • Installing temporary secure fencing and barriers.
  • Starting installation of the new stormwater drain that will run under SH2, from Matapihi Road to Bayfair Shopping Centre.
  • Earthworks in preparation for construction of the new Maunganui-Girven intersection on and off ramps.
  • Locating underground services (power, water, gas and fibre) as well as carrying out the plan to protect the service cables during construction.
  • Further work on the design which is approaching 85% completion and is on track to be completed and approved in early 2018.
  • Road surface repairs to avoid potholes developing, which were undertaken at night.

A 50km/h temporary speed restriction is now in place throughout the site for the duration of the project for the safety of drivers and their passengers, and also for the people working on the project.

The works around Harris Street and Bayfair Shopping Centre are part of the Bayfair infrastructure upgrades and not related to this project.

Construction requirements may mean peoples' usual pedestrian and/or cycle routes will be temporarily unavailable and we request that the safe alternatives provided are used instead. For your safety please do not enter construction work areas at any time.

Please take care

Please take care when travelling through the site at all times and keep to the 50km/h temporary speed limit.

The road lane widths have been narrowed along SH2 and this means you have less time to react to other vehicles. With construction underway, there will also be more truck and project vehicles accessing the site and in the road shoulders.

The construction site will be closed from Thursday 21 December 2017 until Monday 8 January 2018.
