SOUNZ Contemporary finalists will be announced at the beginning of August.

We received more entries than ever before for the SOUNZ Contemporary Award. As the judging panel is working hard to decide whose works will be selected as the three finalists this year (to be revealed in the week beginning 10 August), you can refresh your memory by listening to the works of last year’s finalists: Leonie Holmes, Michael Norris and Celeste Oram.

SMCO announcement

SOUNZ and Auckland based St Matthews Chamber Orchestra (SMCO) are pleased to announce the five composers whose works were selected to be workshopped and performed in August this year. The following works were chosen by a panel consisting of representatives of the SMCO and the Composers Association of New Zealand (CANZ):

Callum Blackmore: Three vignettes for orchestra
David Hamilton: Solar Phoenix
Andrew McMillian: In the shadow of the dark moon
Denzel Panama: Time in Paradise
Alex Taylor: silk/gravel

NZCF-SOUNZ Composition Competition at the 2015 Big Sing Festival

Winners of the NZ Music Awards at the NZCT Chamber Music Contest announced

This time of the year is busy-busy for young NZ musicians, with multiple competitions taking place. SOUNZ contributes to many competitions by offering prizes for best performances or compositions of NZ music.

Winners of the NZCF-SOUNZ Composition Competition have been announced, with Rosa Elliott taking first place for her piece Requiem.

Congratulations to the winners of the NZ Music Awards at the 2015 NZCT Chamber Music Contest. This year a total of 44 different works by 30 NZ composers were performed by participating ensembles at the NZCT Chamber Music Contest District rounds in June.

Additionally, 14 different works by NZ composers were chosen by the contestants in this year’s Wallace National Piano Competition. Lucy Zeng won the SOUNZ Award for best performance of a NZ music piece, performing Gao Ping’s dance fury - homage to Astor Piazzolla.

Te Māngai Pāho Māori Music Funding Round 2015

Te Māngai Pāho is currently seeking to fund a range of high quality Māori music tracks for broadcast through the network of 21 iwi radio stations. Applicants are now invited to submit proposals for recordings in the 2015 Māori Music Funding Round, by 5pm, Thursday 9 July 2015.

Auckland Council’s Music in Parks 2016

Auckland City Council is looking for established and upcoming New Zealand based artists across a range of genres from rock, blues, pop, and electronic to country, jazz, big band and swing to feature in the 2016 Music in Parks concert series. Submissions close at midnight, Sunday 9 August.

Salina Fisher, our very own Resound Audio Curator, is also the current NZSO National Youth Orchestra Composer-in-Residence. Her new work Rainphase, was recently performed by the NYO in Wellington and Christchurch. SOUNZ interviewed Salina about her work, and you read her responses and view video snippets of her work here.

And for those who didn’t get a chance to attend the NZSO NYO concerts: SOUNZ will be sharing with you a video of her time at the NZSO in August, including the concert in full.

New resources

Jack Body: Passing By This album features chamber works by one of our most revered and cherished composers. With new recordings from NZTrio and Stephen De Pledge, recent recordings from Kronos Quartet, Del Sol Quartet, Stroma New Music Ensemble, New Music Works Ensemble, David Radzynski, and Ensemble Nomad, Passing By is a testament to the career of one of New Zealand’s most inspired (and inspiring) artists.

NZTrio: Lightbox NZTrio’s exceptional new recording features recent commissions by some of the finest of the current generation of New Zeland composers. Taking its title from Karlo Margetić’s SOUNZ Contemporary award-winner, Lightbox features works by Claire Cowan, Rachel Clement, Alex Taylor, Samuel Holloway, Gao Ping, and Chris Gendall.

Events

The New Zealand Brass Band Championships take place in Rotorua from 8-12 July.

This year you can watch performances at this competition online. From 7:30pm on Thursday 9 July you will be able to watch events at: www.brassbanned.com

The New Zealand International Film Festival takes place from 16 July to 20 September at various locations around the country. This year the NZIFF includes a selection of music films that feature music and sound by NZ composers, as well as a documentary about SOUNZ composer Phil Dadson. Take a look here…

NZSM presents STILL MUSIC, a concert of Lilburn’s electroacoustic music and late piano works, on 23 July.

Curated by Michael Norris and Dugal McKinnon, this carefully balanced programme will illuminate how Lilburn became fascinated by issues of space, sound and symmetry.
