Students swap helmets for spanners

Not many teenagers can boast being able to build their own bike as well as ride it. Six students from Victoria Point State High School have become the latest students to do just that thanks to charity Traction, run from Shed 27 in Capalaba.

Message from the Mayor

The decision to end sand mining on North Stradbroke Island by 2019 reinforces the importance of the Toondah Harbour development.

The $1.4 billion Toondah Priority Development Area project, provided it meets strict Federal Government environmental criteria, will be a catalyst for Straddie to stake its position as a leading tourism destination.

Members appointed to the Redland Economic Development Advisory Board

Six members have now been appointed to the Redland Economic Development Advisory Board, with Sirromet’s Terry Morris recently named as the sixth member.

With more than 50 years of commercial experience, Mr Morris brings a wealth of knowledge from a variety of industries including tourism, biotechnology and hospitality.

Mr Morris joins the following board members who are from industry and employment growth sectors identified in the Redland Economic Development Framework 2014-2041 adopted by Council last year: 

  • Chair of the Board is information and communications industry executive Samantha Kennedy.
  • Business leader and former CEO of the Mater Misericordiae Health Service Brisbane, Dr John O’Donnell.
  • Pro Vice Chancellor Partnerships and Pathways at Bond University, Catherine O’Sullivan.
  • Young achiever Jordan Duffy, who won the Inspirational Redlander award and was a finalist for Young Australian of the Year since starting his own enterprise at fourteen years of age.
  • National publishing executive Jerry Harris, the former managing director of Newscorp Australia’s publishing business.

Retro fans rock ‘n’ roll in the Redlands

Annual rockabilly spectacular Greazefest is set to rock ‘n’ roll at the Cleveland Showgrounds in August thanks to sponsorship from Council. 

The event is one of more than 40 initiatives to be supported by Council’s latest round of grants and sponsorship.

School holiday fun aplenty in the Redlands

Keep the kids busy these school holidays with a fantastic line-up of free events in the Redlands.

Enjoy local Indigenous culture at Seek, Unearth, Explore Quandamooka Country on Friday 1 July at Indigiscapes. Sample bush tucker, try Indigenous dance and art or listen to stories of our Traditional Owners at this free family fun day out.

Enjoy the thrills and spills of CIRCA – Carnival of the Animals or the sparkly energy of The Fairies – Let’s Party Tour at RPAC.

Redland Libraries will be abuzz with Finding Nemo & Dory Fun, Roald Dahl Day and 3D design. With an extensive program of free activities for all ages across the city, there’s something for everyone. Kids can make interactive mazes with Lego, learn about circuits and electronics or create spot art with stickers. 

At the Redland Art Gallery, kids can create a cartoon character or learn to weave natural fibres with local indigenous artists. There’s even a special event for teens, who can learn to make zines with Jeremy Staples.

What's On in Redland City

The action and entertainment continues in the Redlands this month with a host of high-quality events to be held in the city during June.

Motoring enthusiasts will love the Vintage Car Club Day at Ormiston House on Sunday 26 June. Enjoy Devonshire Tea on the verandah or bring a picnic to enjoy on the lawn while admiring the beautifully restored vintage cars on display.

For those who prefer two wheels, Brisbane’s largest charity bike ride the the MS Brissie to Bay Ride will be held on 19 June and the Bayview Blast on 25-26 June.

The Redland Bay Amateur Fishing Club has competitions every weekend this month. Try your luck at reeling in the big one!
