These paintings depict Jesus’ journey from the last supper, to his crucifixion, death and burial, including 14 Stations of the Cross. There is a particular theme throughout this series of art – the use of hands belonging to Jesus and others, so beautifully depicting fear, despair, humility, pain, pity, vulnerability, and yet, there is also power, strength, gentleness, forgiveness and love. These artworks were carefully selected to provide an opportunity for our JPC students to explore a connection with Jesus. The use of hands in this series is significant, portraying the breadth of Jesus humanity, and this resonates with us in our own existence, as our hands to experience His human emotion – when we hold on tight with fear or love, when we make a fist in anger or frustration, when we caress another with care or tenderness. Father Mark blessed the installation today, in readiness for our devotion to the Stations of the Cross which would be held on Good Friday. We are fortunate to have our Youth Ministers, Nick Barry and Caitlyn D’Cruze, and our staff, College Leaders and Youth Ministry Team who worked together to create a beautiful video of the devotions. This will be made available to the JPC community on Holy Thursday before we break for the Easter holiday period. Mrs Jennifer Tually Leader of Mission and Ministry Palm SundayThis weekend is Palm Sunday, a Catholic feast that falls on the Sunday before Easter. It is the final Sunday of Lent, the beginning of Holy Week, and commemorates the triumphant arrival of Christ in Jerusalem, days before he was crucified. Palm Sunday is known as such because the faithful will often receive palm fronds which they use to participate in the re-enactment of Christ's arrival in Jerusalem. In the Gospels, Jesus entered Jerusalem riding a young donkey, and to the lavish praise of the townspeople who threw clothes, or possibly palms or small branches, in front of him as a sign of homage. This was a customary practice for people of great respect. Palm branches are widely recognized symbol of peace and victory, hence their preferred use on this day. During the Palm Sunday Mass, palms are distributed to parishioners who carry them in a ritual procession into church. The palms are blessed and many people will fashion them into small crosses or other items of personal devotion. These may be returned to the church, or kept for the year. Because the palms are blessed, they may not be discarded. Instead, they are gathered and incinerated to create the ashes that will be used in the following year's Ash Wednesday observance. Please take the time to begin Holy Week, and prepare yourself and your family for the Easter season by joining a Palm Sunday Mass online, and connect with our JPC community in our Stations of the Cross video next week.
