National News
The following news is provided to keep our business leaders up to date. Government focus on long-term food, fibre growth ![]() Food and fibre export revenue is tipped to reach $54.6 billion this year and hit a record $66.6b in 2028 as the Government focuses on getting better access to markets and cutting red tape, Agriculture Minister Todd McClay and Oceans and Fisheries Minister Shane Jones say. “This achievement is testament to the hard work and resilience of our farmers, growers, processors, fishers and foresters,” Mr McClay says. Amid global inflation and lower demand, this year’s forecast result is a 5 per cent dip on last year’s record $57.4b. However, export revenue is expected to lift significantly over the coming four years, with sustained growth forecasting a record $66.6b in 2028. “The Coalition Government has set the aspirational goal of becoming an exporting powerhouse by doubling the value of our exports in 10 years. Our food and fibre sector will be pivotal to achieving this goal,” Mr McClay says. Government to reverse blanket speed limit reductions ![]() The Coalition Government will reverse Labour’s blanket speed limit reductions by 1 July 2025 through a new Land Transport Rule released for public consultation today, Transport Minister Simeon Brown says. The draft speed limit rule will deliver on the National-ACT coalition commitment to reverse the previous government’s blanket speed limit reductions. It will ensure that when speed limits are set, economic impacts – including travel times – and the views of road users and local communities are taken into account, alongside safety. “The previous government’s untargeted approach slowed Kiwis and the economy down, rather than targeting high crash areas of the network,” Mr Brown says. “Our draft speed limit rule will require speed limits that have been reduced since 1 January 2020 to be reversed on local streets, arterial roads, and state highways. It will also require variable speed limits outside schools during pick up and drop off times to keep young New Zealanders safe. ![]() Weaker by the dozen. ![]() ![]() Against a backdrop of rapid population growth, economic output is set to continue being a lot worse on a per capita (per person) basis. On a per capita basis, economic output has been in decline for the past 5 quarters. And we ended 2023 down a massive 3.1% over the year. We’re likely to see that trend continue as high levels of net-migration continue at a time of economic weakness. Usually, more people mean more demand and more output. But high interest rates are dominating. On per capita terms, we’re running at output levels weaker than they were during the 2008 GFC. Major health and safety consultation begins ![]() A substantial consultation on work health and safety will begin today with a roadshow across the regions over the coming months, says Workplace Relations and Safety Minister Brooke van Velden. This the first step to deliver on the commitment to reforming health and safety law and regulations, set out in the ACT-National Coalition Agreement. “Our health and safety culture can be summed up by the sea of orange road cones that have taken over the country. From Santa parades to property development, you can’t get a lot done without having to set up a barricade of cones. “While they may improve health and safety in some places, in other situations their prevalence just doesn’t make any sense. “Businesses and community organisations spend a huge amount of money trying to keep people safe, but it’s worthwhile asking: are the rules and expectations proportionate to the actual risks, and when should common sense prevail? “Lawyers and company directors should not have to be kept up late at night anguishing over what ‘so far as is reasonably practicable’ means. ![]()
