Click here JPC Key Message Week 4, Term 2 2020Dear Parents and Carers, We were very pleased to be able to welcome back our Senior students and transition them back into the school this week. The level of noise and excitement on Monday was a testament to how much they had missed their peers and school. It was also wonderful to see so many practical elements, that could not be completed at school, became the priority of the teaching this week. Next week Seniors need to attend school for the full day as was “normal practice” before remote learning – including Pastoral Care and ILT lessons. Seniors may sign out if they have a free lesson in Period 5 to go home, though we do encourage them to remain at school so they are able to access teachers as required. We ask that Seniors not leave the school between lessons to limit the coming and going from school. The AST Familiarisation program will recommence as face-to-face sessions next week for our Year 12 Tertiary students. This program takes place on Tuesdays in periods 4 and 5 and is compulsory for any Year 12 student sitting the AST. Next week we welcome back our Year 7 students. We understand that for many of them this may be causing some anxiety. We plan a very gentle week with the cohort and understand that many new concepts that they had just started to understand may need to be re-visited – including the use of lockers, managing ILT and reading their timetables. We will begin the day by assisting students to move to their elective classes which is their first timetabled class for the day. Even though they have been undertaking these classes remotely, they have not been able to be physically in these new spaces so we will ensure that no one becomes lost. Monday will also have an extended Pastoral Care time so any timetable or locker issues can be sorted. Remote Learning for Year 7 students will cease on Monday next week. Some vulnerable students may require remote learning in a modified way if they are unable to attend school. Please contact the Front Office if you believe your child may require this. ILT re-commences for all students in Week 5. Students in Years 8, 9, 10 will continue to do work remotely, including ILT work. The staff are continuing to work hard to ensure these are rigorous and engaging lessons, while also moving to face-to-face teaching with the year groups who have returned to school. I thank all our parents for their ongoing patience as we transition back to normal schooling and for allowing us the time to be able to work with the Year 7 students in a quieter, more settled environment for their first week back. The Canteen will be open and the Canteen staff are very much looking forward to beginning cooking and feeding the students and staff. I wish you all a safe and restful weekend. Stephanie O'Meara Principal In and Around JPCUS Embassy - JPC ForumThe famed Polish-American diplomat Brzezinski wisely said that “A great deal of world politics is a fundamental struggle, but it is also a struggle that has to be waged intelligently.” This is the spirit that we aim to instil in all of our students as we teach international relations through the World in Conflict (Years 9-10) and Global Studies (Years 11-12) courses. To further their engagement, our Global Studies students had the tremendous opportunity to have a Zoom Forum with Bibi Voyles (Political Officer – U.S. Embassy) and Mark Bissonnette (Assistant Public Diplomacy Officer – U.S. Embassy) to discuss the USA/China/Australia relationship. It was an insightful and wide-ranging discussion that not only covered the ‘One Belt One Road’ initiative, but a range of contemporary geopolitical issues. The warmth and astuteness of their responses to our students’ insightful questions was exemplary, and most helpfully, they gave our students seeking a career in the International Relations sphere wise advice on potential pathways. Among the many many takeaways was the vivid picture painted of the world in 2030 – with Asia set to contain over 50% of the world’s population, and potentially accounting for 40% of global GDP (with half of that coming from China). Further, countries like India, the Philippines and Vietnam are set to challenge the more established economies of Japan & South Korea. Asia will be a major player in the lives and careers of our students in the coming years, and a strong understanding of the region is vital. How Australia navigates the time ahead will undoubtedly shape our nation, as will its enduring relationship with the USA. JPC sincerely thank the U.S. Embassy for their continued friendship, and for helping create such vibrant and enlivening experiences for our students. Jason Paris Leader of Learning and Wellbeing, SOSE & Drexel Year 9 & 10 DanceThe Year 9 & 10 Dance class met via zoom yesterday wearing all white, as directed by Ms Mostyn. These white t-shirts or jumpers were worn for a dance class zoom starter activity, which required students to think of their white t-shirt as a blank canvas. Students were then directed in the zoom to create either a shape or slogan for their t-shirt which resembled how they were feeling at that moment. The students came up with excellent creative responses, some hilarious, some deep and meaningful, some thoughtful. Dance at JPC is still going strong in our online learning environment! Ms Mostyn Dance teacher Scaling and Scoring - for Senior StudentsOn Wednesday 27 May (Week 5) during Period 5, we will be having an information session for Senior students - “Scaling and Scoring - the Facts explained and the Myths debunked”. We will record this and put it up onto our Website for our parents to access. Mrs O'Meara CareersHappy National Career's WeekWhat a busy careers week it has been, with Year 10 engaging in a variety of senior subject information zoom's and our Year 12's gearing up to apply for early entry at university. I have sensed a bit of anxiety about Y10 Senior Subject selection. Rest assured that they still have time to consider their options. In Week 10, Year 10 will participate in transition week where students will also have a chance to engage with a range of educational institutions and employment organisations to assist them in the decision. This week, all JPC students were able to engage with careers through mentoring - I hope they asked you about your first jobs! Some of our wonderful JPC teachers shared their career's stories and tips. If you would like to watch the videos, just press on their names: First Jobs

The winners were announced last week and there were some very sincere and heartfelt entries. ANZAC Day is always a special day in Australian and New Zealanders’ hearts and this year our country truly displayed the spirit of the ANZACs with acts of teamwork and courage. JPC students who submitted poems for our ANZAC Day Poetry Competition, showed this spirit will live on with the quality of their poems. Thank you to everyone who entered. If you did something special to commemorate ANZAC Day this year (dawn driveway service, made a wreath, made a lantern etc), we would love to see your photos. These photos will go into a special presentation for Remembrance Day later in the year. Please send any photos to vicki.walsh@cg.catholic.edu.au I look forward to welcoming your Defence child back to JPC over the next two weeks. Vicki Walsh, DSM Catholic Education - ENROLLING NOW!Did You Know?Enroling into the Senior Years at JPC can be a difficult decision, and this is made harder when your child say's 'everyone' is leaving.
It is hoped that the choice families make is based on what measurable differences exist and how these align to the needs of each student. It is a big decision to move from a school where you are known to a school that does not know the student and is actually an unknown entity to the student and the family….. Lots to consider. If you have any questions with enrolment into the Senior years, please email the college office to arrange a time to have a discussion. Thank you Senior Subject Information Sessionsvia ZoomThe Senior Subject Information Sessions via Zoom were held this week (19-21 May 2020) and many students joined the zoom sessions to discover what subjects are on offer in the Senior Years. The zoom sessions will be available on our website over the next few days for those who missed them or would like to go over the information. If you have any questions with regards to any of the subjects, please contact either the teacher in the zoom session or email the college office.
