Social Notes from Vice Commodore Dan...

The tremors have started again…  I am sitting here at work going through a mild to moderate case of Labor Day withdrawal.  I might as well go with the moment, forget about work and reflect on my Labor Day weekend that was challenging and relaxing and full of the beauty of nature and the warmth of great company and the pleasure of meeting new people.  I sincerely hope yours was too.

I know many of our members spent the weekend at South Beach Harbor going to the Saturday Giants game and enjoying the weekend in town.  My embedded sources tell me it was a great weekend with nearly perfect weather.

One of my first messages this morning was from the club construction folks wanting access to the club for some messy drywall removal work.  Back to reality!  The club is going to undergo some intrusive construction over the next few weeks.  Up to now we have been able to somewhat mask some of the work.  Not so much anymore.  Our galley will be un-useable and we will have plastic sheeting up to protect the rest of our building.   I ask for your patience with the remodel.  We will have it finished in no time.

And on to more celebratory social news:

On September  12th we will be having a General Meeting and Drop In Dinner.  We will have Lina’s wonderful cooking. The September general meeting is also the “nominating meeting”. At this meeting, the Nominating Committee shall nominate their candidates and further nominations may be made from the floor.  We will also have many first and several second readings.

On Tuesday, September 16th we have something new you will want to check out.  Kathy Harris has arranged some Western Swing Dance lessons over the next several weeks!  Tony Zavilenski and Joan Mersman have agreed to teach us the history and basic steps of the dance!  So, please come on down to the club before 7:00 with a partner or as a single and be prepared to move and have some fun.

You know that beautiful DeWitt painting hanging next to the giant wheel in the dining room?  It shows a multi-colored sunset and the profile of several small sailboats at the bottom.  We have enjoyed it for many years but we cannot take its possession for granted.  It is a trophy we earn every year in the Barth Race.

This year’s Barth Race festivities begin Friday, September 19th with a dinner at the Coyote Point Yacht Club.  The race takes place the next day and runs from Coyote Point down to Redwood City.  On Saturday, September 20th Kathy Harris and Larry Mayne will be hosting the Western BBQ Dinner.  So, racers – skippers, crews and families, please consider taking your boat up Friday evening, enjoy the hospitality of our friends up North and come racing down for more food  and live music on Saturday night.  Black toppers are also encouraged!
And let’s keep the DeWitt!

On that same weekend we will be participating in the Coastal Cleanup.

September 27th is Oktoberfest at Sequoia.   This is one of our most popular events and I will have more details as they emerge.

And please put the Redwood City Port fest on your calendar for October 4th! www.rwcportfest.com.

See you around the club.

Great Hannig Cup!

This is the 9th year that Ted Hannig has organized the Hannig Cup, the "Give Something Back"  race, and to date has distributed over $2,000,000 to charities. This year was another amazing year, with a fun pirate themed race and some unique ways for money to be given out and allowed for the participants to not only donate but be able to vote on where the money should go.

This year also provided some extra nautical adventure as the host with your commodore aboard, went aground to the viewing pleasure of all of the racers as they returned. Alls well that ends well. The folks aboard were safely rescued and the boat was eventually retrieved once the tide had returned.

The dinner and event were fabulous and the Club was a packed house of generous pirate attired sailors. The winner of the race and the Hannig Cup was Chris Huang on L2O with a PYSF crew and the boat that raised the most money was Larry Mayne with his boat Go Now. The final talley of the money raised and distributed is still being tallied, but I am sure it was another banner year.

Thank you to Ted Hannig and all of the many volunteers who worked to make this another great Sequoia Yacht Club event.

Fun Labor Day Cruise Out to South Beach Marina

Fun Time at the Giants Game

Pot Luck Brunch at the Dock

We had another terrific Sequoia Yacht Club Cruise Out for Labor Day weekend. Thanks go to our cruise out captains Grace and Dennis Lowe.  This year we had 50 people enjoy the pre-game Triples Alley and great seats for the game. The weather was wonderful all weekend and the game was really a good one with alot of good offense and defensive plays. Slips are always difficult to come by, but this year the Lowe's did a magnificant job in making all of this work.

The weather, wind and tides were perfect in both directions which was a nice added plus.

Thanks again for a fun weekend with friends.

Fall Junior Sailing Classes Start September 6th

The Sequoia Yacht Club, Jr. El Toro program has been around for over thirty years, run by dedicated volunteer members of the Sequoia Yacht Club of Redwood City, CA. The lessons take place inside the Port of Redwood City at the recreational end, where the yachts and clubs are and where the water is protected and calm. This area of the port is roughly 15 acres in size, and is well insulated from the conditions of the San Francisco Bay, which is over a mile to the east. Close monitoring, instruction and guidance are provided on the water by a SYC Sailing Instructor riding on a safety boat. The kids are constantly close at hand, and are encouraged to not sail if they feel uneasy about it. The SYC JSP Sailing motto is "if in doubt, don't go out". This saying is stressed over and over again during the preliminary, on-shore "chalk talks" where we discuss safety and seamanship.

The classes emphasize safety conscious FUN sailing, considering weather, tides, traffic, etc. at all times. Besides learning general seamanship, like knots and equipment care, students learn boat nomenclature, rigging, boat handling, proper upwind sailing, tacking, downwind sailing, jibing, boat speed, racing tactics, sportsmanship and the rules of racing.

There are two levels of the Jr. El Toro program: Beginner, which starts at 9:00AM on Saturday mornings and Intermediate which begins at 11:00am, also on Saturday morning. The intermediate class is a feeder class into the advanced "Laser" class.  Cost of $190 per student.

For more information please see the Junior Sailing website by clicking here.

Blessing for Donna Summer, September 12th

No, not the singer; It's Olivia Sadlowski’s new sailboat. Come join Olivia for this blessing and celebration of her sailboat Donna Summer.  This will be held at 1730 (5:30 PM) Friday September 12th at the guest dock prior to our general meeting. This is an age-old nautical tradition and always a fun time. There will be champagne.

See you there,
