END OF TERM 2 | 2021

Dear Families,

Welcome to the second edition of The Regent Imprint for 2021, where we seek to positively impact the lives of our students, families and community.

To start this edition of the Imprint, we have some excellent news to share!

The Department of Education WA has awarded Regent College 5 years of Registration Renewal!

All independent schools across Australia are required to be registered with their State Education Department.
The rigorous process of registration includes a review of policies, governance, child safety, and much more.
Being awarded five years (the maximum term the department awards) is an outstanding achievement by our College. Thank you to all those involved!

Another number we are excited to celebrate is...... the number 40!

Next year Regent College will be celebrating 40 years. We look forward to celebrating this milestone with our current families and alumni. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for more information about the 40th celebrations next year.

Lost Uniforms
School holidays are a good time for families to complete a 'uniform audit'. We ask that you please check your children's uniforms for any items that do not belong to them. If you find any, please add them to the Lost Property Box located outside the uniform shop. This may also be a good opportunity to please write your child's name on each of their uniform items. Having names written on uniform items helps return missing items to the correct student when they are lost.

FREE SHIRT SWAP!
Formal Blue Shirts - Wrong Logo

Anyone who has a blue short sleeve shirt with the REGENT logo in WHITE, can you (or your child) please bring the shirt back to the office or uniform shop (must be washed) by the end of Week 1 of Term 3. The shirt will immediately be replaced with a brand new blue short sleeve shirt with the correct navy logo at no cost to you.

Regent Care Squares

THANK YOU to everyone who crochet/knitted squares this term!
The College received over 900 squares! These will be turned into blankets and gifted to people doing it tough this winter season.

Congratulations to the House Rivers who were awarded the Golden Needle, for completing the most squares closely followed by Burrows and Johnson.

A special thank you to all the families, including extended family members who got involved, including a Grandma who sent three knitted blankets (pictured) over from Sydney!

Regent Soccer Team

Congratulations to the Year 5 and 6 students who represented Regent College at the Rehoboth Competition!
The team represented the College very well on and off the field. They came overall first place in the competition and WACSSA Soccer Carnival. Brilliant effort by the team and coaches Mrs Wills and Mr Chan!

NAIDOC Assembly

Years 1 - 6 attended a NAIDOC assembly presented by class 3A this term. Sadly due to COVID-19 restrictions families and special guests were unable to attend as originally planned.

EduDance Concert

Throughout Term 3, all Pre-Primary to Year 6 students enjoyed learning creative hip-hop dance routines part of the EduDance program.

In light of the COVID-19 lockdown in the Perth and Peel Regions, the EduDance Concert planned to take place at Providence Christian College was sadly cancelled.

The College was glad to have had the opportunity to still complete the program over the term and thanks families for their support in the unfortunate situation.

A video link will be sent out to families in the coming weeks for you to watch the final performance.

Parent Collective

Hello from the Parent Collective!
We are a group of parents who have a passion and interest to build a Christ-like school community and support the school with various events and initiatives. One such event was the Welcome Morning Tea at the start of the year for new and Kindy Parents. It can be nerve-wracking to bring your child to their first day of school, so this was great to get to know the new families.

Being an inner-city school, it can be a challenge to find room for the kids to run and play. For this reason, the PC supported the addition of the Adventure Plus Climbing Playground structure located on the oval. This has been a wonderful addition for the kids to exercise their little limbs. Term 2 kicked off with the Easter assembly followed by the Easter morning tea, where we celebrated and bonded with other Regent College parents over coffee, tea and hot cross buns. The PC has also supported the addition of a new basketball ring, educational resources, The Fathering Project, House flags and more.

Kindergarten and Pre-Primary wear Physical Education uniform each day.

Please note that smart watches are not part of the uniform and are not permitted unless there is an arrangement with the Principal.

SKORTS - Your thoughts?

Regent College is exploring the idea of introducing skorts* to the girl's College Uniform.
* A skort is a cross between a skirt and a pair of shorts.

We would appreciate it if you could spare a few minutes to please complete this short survey, and share your thoughts on the uniform.

Lost Property

As mentioned above, the school holidays are a good time to complete a uniform audit at home. We ask that over the holiday break you check your children's uniforms for any items that do not belong to them. If you find any, please add them to the Lost Property Box located outside the uniform shop. This box is not free uniforms.

While checking uniforms, it may also be a good opportunity to write your child's name on each of their uniform items. Having names written on uniform items helps return missing items to the correct student.

As this term draws to a close, Teachers have written short snapshots on some of the wonderful events, activities and learning that has taken place in each year group this term.

Term 2 in Kindergarten has been a discovery about where we belong. Part of our learning focus is to encourage the children to develop a sense of belonging to groups and communities and to begin to understand the right and responsibilities necessary for active community participation. The classes have engaged in discussions about what a community looks like and who belongs in a community. We explored different emergency services, vehicles, and workers. The excursion to Little Land was a highlight for many of the students as we engaged in many different dramatic play opportunities.

In Art, the students have enjoyed collaborative art experiences. Through working together, students have an opportunity to cooperate with others and negotiate roles and relationships in the group experience.

Next term we are looking forward to more exciting adventures of learning and discovery!

We have had so much fun exploring, inquiring and learning through River School this term! We visited Heirisson Island and found kangaroos, ants and other creatures that live there. We had a look at harsh weather such as rain, hail and sun, and thought about how it affects living things.

We also discussed building shelters at Heirisson Island, as shelters can be used to take refuge from harsh weather. Together with our Parent Helpers, we built our shelters with natural materials that we found there, such as branches and leaves. While we were building our shelters, we considered the type, size and quantity of natural materials that we were going to use. It has been an exciting few weeks of River School at Heirisson Island and we’re so grateful to all the Parent Helpers that joined us for our visits!

In week 5 of Term 2, the Year 1 classes went on an excursion to CREEC (Canning River Eco Education Centre) to learn about the local environment. We started the day in groups putting together giant puzzles of local landscapes that included native animals. In smaller groups, we explored trays of animal items, such as snakeskin, turtle shells, feathers and nests. It was exciting to guess which item belonged to which animal. Later, we went on a bushwalk and searched for evidence of animals in the environment. We put flags in places where we made observations because we learnt that you cannot take these items out of their natural environment. Finally, we each got to make something from clay to demonstrate our learning. It was a really fun event and a great introduction to our next learning topic “features and changes in the environment”.

Here are some comments from students about their learning:

“We learnt about what animals drop. They can drop feathers and they can make prints.” – Milla

“When we found interesting things, like animal evidence, like footprints and feathers, we put a flag on it.” – Pete

“We learnt about animals and prints and nests. Inside the nest I think there are some baby birds and some food.” – Lucas

In Science, students have been learning about push and pull forces. Before making paper helicopters, students predicted which helicopter would fall to the ground first, short or long wings and discussed the reasons why. Next task, students were keen to design, create, launch and evaluate their parachute. They had to consider which materials to use and what would be the best shape to make their parachute stay in the air for as long as possible. Each student used the class results to construct a bar graph. Six seconds was the best outcome. Which Plane Flies Best? After constructing 2-3 different paper planes to test for the paper plane flying competition, they measured the distance flown by their fastest paper plane using tape measures or trundle wheels. Finally, we created a class column graph to represent the total distance flown by each student’s paper plane test flights.

Term 2, 2021 was off to a flying start mid-April with a brief study of ANZAC Day before settling down to an in-depth look at NAPLAN testing and what that would look like for us during Weeks 4 and 5. It was an emotional time to be sitting our first formal national tests, but we took it in our stride and performed to the best of our ability. Our teachers and Administration staff are very proud of us.
One of the exciting things we've all been doing this term has been our Edudance rehearsals.  We love to showcase our dance abilities in front of our parents and look forward to our families watching the Edudance video, as we sadly had to cancel our in-person concert. This year double stream classes performed their final dance together. This was yet another opportunity to work together and give it our best.

In HASS, the Year Fours focussed on Civics and Citizenship. We were treated with a special visit from Natalie Martin Goode, Chief Community Planner, from the Town of Victoria Park who taught us about all the services the shire has to offer its residents.

In Science, our focus has been on properties of materials where we combined our Design and Technology learning area to make our own houses. Both classes did an amazing job building a variety of interesting designs and showing their knowledge about the different materials that they used. We certainly have some budding architects in this group!

Fractions, temperature and time were our focus for mathematics this term. The students enjoyed designing their own fraction pizzas and conducting a temperature experiment. Hopefully, their knowledge of time has proved useful in the home too!

Holidays are a great time for extra reading and board games with the family, where children learn the skills of winning and losing graciously in a safe environment. Many thanks to the parents who have provided some ‘care squares’, but we are especially proud of the children who have knitted them independently. Well done to all of you.

This term we have enjoyed learning about the topic of “Light” in Science. The students completed a range of experiments to see how light behaves in our everyday lives. We investigated how shadows are formed and how the position of the light source affects the size of the shadow, and how light can be reflected using mirrors to make its way around objects. We learnt about how refraction occurs in different settings, causing objects to appear bent in water and forming rainbows in the sky. We also looked at how light can be produced using electricity in an incandescent lightbulb. Did you know that 90% of energy in an incandescent lightbulb is lost as heat? That’s why we now use much more efficient bulbs like LEDs! We learnt about how we see colours because of light reflecting off different objects in different ways. It has been a really fascinating experience to learn about light!

Throughout the term, the Year Sixes in Economics have been learning about setting up and marketing a business. We had all sorts of business ideas from “Dogs On Wheels, Bath Salts and Blue Candy.” The students then established their own business and advertisement.

Our topic in Geography this term was Asia, and we looked at the Dollar Street Website, which showed the students how people in Asian countries lived. The students discovered that Australians have a very high standard of living compared to most people in the world. Additionally, students researched a country of their choice in Asia and produced a poster about their country.

In Art, we have continued with our theme of A-Z of Art. This term we looked at the artists, George Seurat, Friedrich Hundertwasser, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Hokusai Katsushika. The students created some exciting art pieces.

It was an exciting start to the term with a trip to Rottnest Island. The students went on a bus trip around the island, and they managed to see seals, an osprey and many quokkas. They had a splash in the ocean and went for a walk around the island. The students completed a rubbish clean up, and even though the island looked clean, we managed to collect a lot of rubbish.
This term, we participated in a second rubbish clean up at the Swan River. We talked about the impact even small pieces of rubbish can have on the environment and animals. We managed to collect two rubbish bags.
On one evening, the River Rangers went into the bush for a bushwalk looking for animals. They managed to find a few possums looking for food and hiding amongst the buildings.
To end our program for the term, we will be having a campfire, roasting marshmallows and having a sing-along.

The Year 5 and 6 netball teams had the privilege of attending the WACSSA inter-school netball carnival this term. Both teams played their hardest and ended the day in second place for their respective divisions. It was a beautiful day with a great display of skill and sportsmanship! The day would not have been possible without our wonderful Parent Volunteers.

When we casually tune into our favourite song on Spotify, how often do we realise just how much influence music really has on us and our cultural identity? This term, students are finding out the connection between music and cultural heritage, by going back to the past when people bonded as a community through dances and finding out the birth of traditional folk dances.

Our Year 2 students explored 'Polka' – a lively peasant dance that originated in the Czech Republic. The students also learnt and danced to 'Tinikling' – a traditional folk dance from the Philippines that originated during the Spanish colonial era, which was inspired by the movement of a bird called Tikling. To make the experience more authentic, we reused the trimmed and unwanted bamboo sticks from school as poles for our Tinikling dance.

We often talk about the Italian culture in class and this includes learning about food, housing, celebrations, customs and the lifestyle in Italy. We also talk about the rich history of Italy, especially the Ancient Romans.
Some parents may have played ‘knucklebones’ as children, but did you know that this game dates back to Ancient Roman times? Back then, the Romans called the knucklebones ‘tali’ and some were used for decorative purposes and not for playing with. In our Italian lessons, most students have had the opportunity to test their skill, concentration and coordination by playing knucklebones with their peers. The students have found this game to be tricky but a lot of fun! Next term we will learn more about the Ancient Romans and their contributions to society.

Who DARES, wins!
The year 6’s have begun a project to create their own pencil holder for their school desk.  They are following a structure called D.A.R.E.S.
The acronym’s first step is Design, followed by Apply.  The students have designed, and 3D printed their pencil holder, and now we are at the Refine stage.  Does our design meet the project requirements?  What must we do to make it meet the different criteria?  This is an important step that can be generalised to all projects that a student must undertake.  Once the students have refined their design, they can be reprinted.  To complete the project, we evaluate each students’ design, by looking at our own and everyone else’s print to see the different interpretations of the project.

We will share our project on Seesaw for you to all see the finished products!
