MyBeckett News - October 2020

Hello from the Digital Learning Service.  To help signpost system support please see below:

We have worked with CLT and IT Services to update and incorporate Collaborate Ultra into the 'Which Digital Classroom Tool to Use?' guidance.

Collaborate Update

We have seen a large uptake in the new digital classroom tool Collaborate Ultra and some very encouraging feedback.  Therefore we have added further Collaborate training sessions: 'Breakout Groups' and 'Share Content'

  • Would you like to learn Collaborate at your own pace?  Well, head to MyBeckett > Training tab > MyBeckett Modules for Self-Paced Training > Blackboard Collaborate Online training (self-enrol module).  An added bonus of a sandpit module is automatically created and added to your my modules list, for testing purposes.
  • After self-enrolling you'll find a wealth of FAQs and previously recorded Collaborate training sessions (in the module >Try Collaborate > Collaborate Sessions > Burger menu (top left) > Recordings).
  • If you cannot use your webcam or microphone in any Collaborate sessions, you may have inadvertently disabled in your first session.  In Chrome, head to Settings > Privacy and Security > Site Settings > Camera / Microphone. You can then see if any websites are blocking their use.
  • Would you like to adopt attendance monitoring for Collaborate sessions? Please view our short training video.

Collaborate Ultra maintenance: Thursday 8th October 00.00 - 04.00 (BST).  Intermittent service interruptions to live & recorded sessions may be experienced.

Training Update

We have lots of new online training sessions this month, including Collaborate, marking and feedback, student engagement and more!

Turnitin Default Settings

Please double-check your settings when creating Turnitin assignments as we have identified a problem for some users in which 'reveal grades immediately' is defaulting to 'yes'.  We are working with Turnitin to resolve.

Digital Learning Information

  • A new Research (Staff) tab is available, and the Library & IT tabs for students have been updated.  To view MyBeckett as a student, request a staff as student account from the IT Service Desk
  • Want to easily play videos/audio for screen sharing?  In Chrome drag & drop your file onto to the '+' at the top next-door to the tabs.
  • To ensure webinars and systems run as they should ensure that the Chrome browser is up to date.
  • We cannot change students MyBeckett status, course, module enrolment (except non-credit modules) - these are all fed into MyBeckett via Banner data feeds.  Please double-check this Banner info is correct.  If, after 24 hours, incorrect information is still displaying in MyBeckett, raise a case with the IT Service Desk (FAO Data Integration).
  • If using the Module/Course Group Manager & Communicator (to add the same content/announcements across modules), and you experience an error, please clear cache/cookies or use an alternate browser.

Library Update

  • The Library continues to support students remotely with new support for online meetings and collaboration. There are a small number of study spaces available for students with limited access to IT or their own study space which must be booked online.
  • The new Skills for Learning website is now live. It contains advice, resources and activities on studying at university, academic writing, maths, research, IT skills and more. The old website is available until January 2021, so please update any links you have before then. Let us know If there is particular content on the old website which you can’t find on the new one, or any comments on the new site: skills.for.learning@leedsbeckett.ac.uk
  • A reminder that there is a School-Library mailbox for staff in each School to get in touch with Academic Librarians. Details are available on the Library’s contact us webpage
  • E-books for online delivery - update.  1,177 new e-book from the approval titles have been loaded onto the library catalogue earlier this summer. To date, 798 of these have been used, and all enable multiple students to access them simultaneously so support larger cohorts.  Library staff are working hard to upgrade access to hundreds more e-books on reading lists which have limited licences (where only 1-3 users may access the title simultaneously).  This involves signing new agreements with publishers but many titles are only being available on a one-year subscription model, and are significantly more expensive.  Stock on newly updated reading lists continues to be checked and title availability reported back to the appropriate academics. LLI receives regular reports from suppliers of newly available e-books so there is no need for academics to take time to request re-checking of titles.

IT Services Microsoft Teams Update

IT Services have provided a number of MS Teams updates to benefit colleagues in Schools using Teams for teaching delivery. This includes, a new process to request Automated Teams Sites for Modules, Private Chat feature enablement and adding students to the university outlook address book, more here:

Microsoft Teams September 2020 Update →

If you have used the MS Teams/MyBeckett integration and want to share a Stream recording back on the module, you will need to change the permissions to 'all' (which might not be suitable) or download the Stream and upload to Panopto (create > Upload new media), after provisioning the module, so only those on the module can view).
