Social Notes from Vice Commodore Dan...

Thank you Allison Copper and crew for a fantastic evening of food, dancing and revelry at the Delta Time/ Island Time party last Saturday night!  I understand the Mission Varrio Project band and Lina’s catering added greatly to the festivities.  Thank you again to everybody involved.  Our volunteers make Sequoia’s social events the best around!

This week and next will be quiet around the club.  We will have Beer Can Races and Cards on Wednesday this week and throughout August but there will be no DID this Friday.

Next week many of us will be soaking up the sun, fun and food up in the Delta.  I am looking forward to the Gilmore’s Fantasy Island Party and seeing our friends from the Oakland Yacht Club.  And, oh yes, there is the small matter of a game trophy that is currently in the hands of the OYC.   We will see if the results of dinghy hockey are different this year…

Then onto August!

Here is something new on the radar:  a new Soda Can racing series.  Thank you to Peter and Anja Weigt for organizing this from the ground up!  I know this is not necessarily in the Social realm, but I want to note and applaud their efforts and help make our members aware of this new outlet for sailing fun!  I know I want to try it sometime if I can just think of a way to stay warm!   Soda Can races are scheduled for 8/1, 8/15, 8/29.

We will have a DID on August 8th, but no General Meeting.  Wait, is that applause I hear?

On August 22nd, we will enjoy another DID and this evening we will hear a special presentation by Chris and Michele Hartman on their trip to the Antarctic!

Our last Beer Can Race in August (8/27) will be the Hannig Cup Race and awards ceremony.  More on this as it develops.  This is always an uplifting event and a great opportunity for our members to come out and enjoy an evening on the water with friends.  And all for a good cause.

Enjoy your summer!

Delta/Island Time Party Success!

Yay Team!

I wanted to thank you for your help Saturday.  It was a great Delta / Island Time Party and our members and  cruise-in guests from Oyster Point Yacht Club had a fun time due to your efforts.

I want to especially thank our event host, Allison Cooper, and our Cruise-in Captain Petra Gilmore – Outstanding Job!  Kathy Harris did a great job finding a terrific band and getting the decorations organized. Lina was a big help in getting the food organized. In addition we appreciated all the help from Larry and Robin Mayne in both the bar and in the galley.  And, speaking of bartending help, we also had Tod Klingler,  April Given, Malcolm Fliege, Michele Hartman, George Carr,  Jenny Thompson and Rick Gilmore. And a special thanks to my Carole for helping at the door and for Joanne in getting all of the tickets and signup sheet organized.  I am sure that I have forgotten someone, and for that I apologize.

Again thanks for your help in making another great Club event happen.

Soda Can Series to start on August 1st

Ahoy Sailors,

Due to popular demand as expressed in our recent Soda Can Series Survey we are now ready to announce the next series to start on August 1st.

Based on your feedback we have a lot of things in the pipeline and will start with one requested item right away - checkout days!

We would like to give all of you the chance this Sunday 10 AM to either get checked out or practice a little bit for the upcoming series.

In addition to practice we planned to do some boat maintenance. So if you feel inclined, bring your toolbox and help work on the boats for the upcoming races.

Further details about the upcoming races and results can be found on the sequoia website.

I hope to see all of you on the water this weekend.

Race #4 - Single/Double-handed Series

Hi Racers!

The Sequoia Yacht Club Single/ Double-handed Series continues this Saturday, July 26th with Race #4.

This is a five-race series with one throw-out race. The start line for the race will be this time between marker "S" and a committee boat.

The start time is 12:30 PM. The changed starting procedure gives all of us a fair and safe start.  All skippers should attend the skipper's meeting at 10:30 AM on the day of the race. For all of those who couldn't make it down for the first race please don’t forget to sign up and register your boat at Jibeset.

Please make sure that you paid your fees and handed in your release forms before the race. For those boats coming down from CPYC, please email me in advance and I'll provide you with a phone number. You can call me after 11 AM for race instructions and then check-in at the start area.

Anja and I are looking forward to seeing your solo/partner sailing skills!

Good of the Order - July 2014

We had 11 birthdays for the month of July and 28 membership anniversaries. And, some extra good news announced at the General Meeting this month was: Carolyn Peterson and Carol Petersen have both retired. Plan on seeing their smiling faces out there sailing a lot more now on Made Easy and Sea Breeze!

Remember to let me know of any announcements you would like to have at the General Meetings. The membership records include the birthdays for the person who signed up as a member, not their spouses and partners and kids. Also, the documentation for birthdays was started about 10 years ago, so there are a lot missing. Just send me an email and let me know when birthdays are being celebrated as well as other special events. SYC wants to celebrate with you!  YEA!

Interchange Project Public Planning Meeting

The City of Redwood City is hosting a Public Meeting on July 29th, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Downtown Library Community Room (Third Floor,1044 Middlefield Road in Redwood City) to present alternatives for the 101/Woodside interchange.

A presentation will begin promptly at 6:45 p.m. and interactive stations will be available throughout the evening. The stations will include maps and engineers available to discuss the current project alternatives; experts to discuss the various options considered and screened; as well as a station that will take comments regarding a “do nothing” alternative.

This Public Meeting is the continuation of an in-depth community engagement process that will inform, and solicit comments from, the public to support the US101/SR 84 Woodside Road interchange engineering and environmental study now underway.

The City and its project team have developed and assessed a variety of improvements to relieve existing and future traffic congestion and to improve traffic safety and vehicular access at the interchange. The goals of the project include improving highway operations, reducing associated congestion on Redwood City streets, removing barriers to non-motorized travel, and minimizing impacts on nearby businesses.

Thank you to Cathy Moyer  who has volunteered to take the lead on this for the Club and plans to attend this meeting.
