Hutt Valley Business Weekly

Kia Ora ,

This week, we join the global community in observing International Mental Health Week, a vital opportunity to emphasise the importance of mental well-being in our personal and professional lives. While New Zealand’s Mental Health Week is later in the year, now is an excellent time to reflect on how we can nurture healthier, more supportive workplaces.

In the Hutt Valley, our business community is built on innovation, resilience, and collaboration. These same qualities can help us create environments where mental health is prioritised and employees feel valued and supported. By investing in mental health initiatives, we not only do the right thing but also enhance productivity, reduce absenteeism, and foster a more engaged workforce.

Here are some practical tips for integrating mental health strategies into your business:

  • Encourage Open Communication: Create a safe space where employees feel comfortable discussing mental health without fear of stigma or repercussions. Regularly check in with your team and listen to their concerns.
  • Promote Work-Life Balance: Encourage regular breaks, flexible working hours, and time off to help employees manage stress. Consider implementing wellness programs that include mindfulness or relaxation techniques.
  • Provide Resources: Offer access to mental health resources, such as local counselling services or wellness programs. Partner with local mental health organisations to provide workshops or seminars.
  • Lead by Example: Demonstrate a commitment to mental health from the top down by prioritising your own well-being and supporting your team. Share your experiences and promote a culture of openness and support.

This Friday, we also celebrate Pink Shirt Day, a powerful stand against bullying. This event reminds us that promoting kindness and respect is essential to our collective well-being. As leaders and colleagues in the Hutt Valley, we have the responsibility to champion a culture of inclusivity where everyone feels safe and empowered to bring their best selves to work.

Let's work together to make a positive impact on our workplaces and community.

A Huge Thank you to all our Partners for your continued support.

Mills Street Stopbank Rocks (riprap)

Te Awa Kairangi are about to stockpile large rocks (also known as riprap) along the riverbank between Kennedy Good Bridge and Melling Link Bridge for the Mills Street stopbank work. Next week, trucks may be seen on the road delivering this material to the site, and it is likely to be heard being unloaded.

These large rocks will be used to protect the riverbank and reduce the impacts of erosion. The rocks absorb the impact energy from the water while also slowing down the flow of water.

Thank you for your patience during this critical flood protection work.

The following news is provided to keep our business leaders up to date.

Nationwide Emergency Mobile Alert | NZ Civil Defence

The nationwide test of the Emergency Mobile Alert (EMA) system is happening on Sunday, 26 May, between 6-7pm.
The alert will be broadcast from cell towers to about 5 million phones across NZ. As long as your phone is on, capable, and the software is up-to-date, you should receive the alert.
Emergency Mobile Alert is an extra channel that can help keep you safe in an emergency. It does not replace other alerting systems or the need to take action after natural warnings.
You should still be prepared for an emergency. If you feel your in danger, never wait for an official warning. Take immediate action.

Driving ahead with Roads of Regional Significance

The coalition Government is launching Roads of Regional Significance to sit alongside Roads of National Significance as part of its plan to deliver priority roading projects across the country, Transport Minister Simeon Brown says.

“The Roads of National Significance (RoNS) built by the previous National Government are some of New Zealand’s most successful State Highway corridors, reducing congestion and improving safety.

“Expanding this programme to roads that are regionally significant will ensure that our cities and regions are well-connected, and our economy thrives.

“Similar to RoNS, Roads of Regional Significance will single out essential routes that require prioritisation.

New Zealand and United Arab Emirates commence free trade agreement negotiations

On 7 May the Minister for Trade announced that New Zealand and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will commence negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). Speaking in Dubai, Hon Todd McClay said: “The UAE is a key export destination and hub in the Gulf region, and there are significant opportunities to enhance cooperation across a range of areas, including agriculture and sustainable energy. A CEPA with the UAE would also complement our ongoing negotiations towards a free trade agreement with the Gulf Cooperation Council, and I was pleased to advance these discussions during my visit to Saudi Arabia last week and my discussions with Saudi and GCC counterparts.”

NZ-EU FTA entered into force

In a win for Kiwi exporters, the New Zealand-EU Free Trade Agreement (NZ-EU FTA) entered into force on May 1st. This deal secures reductions in tariffs for kiwifruit, wine, seafood, and a wide range of other products. It includes commitments on services and investment, which ensure a level playing field for New Zealand businesses in the EU market. T EU is our fourth-largest trade partner, with combined trade in goods and services exceeding $20 billion annually (representing over 10% of our total trade). The NZ-EU FTA is expected to boost market access for Kiwi exporters, contributing to the government's goal of doubling exports within a decade. To grow the awareness of the opportunities this agreement presents, the Government will undertake an information campaign to help Kiwi businesses grow trade with the EU. For more information about the NZ-EU FTA, including how Kiwi businesses can benefit, visit the NZ-EU FTA page on the MFAT website.

Charitable trust urgently seeks sponsors to sustain crucial science education in Hutt Valley

A charitable trust dedicated to improving science learning in the classroom for thousands of primary aged students in the Hutt Valley is launching an urgent appeal for sponsors so it can continue to operate in the region.

The House of Science’s Hutt Valley branch ‘Hutt Science’ is facing a critical funding challenge with the impending cessation of generous financial support from Hutt City Council and Upper Hutt Council.

For the past nine years, Hutt Science has been dedicated to improving science learning in classrooms across the Hutt Valley by providing innovative and comprehensive curriculum-based science resource kits. These kits, distributed to 67 schools and 15,000 students in the region, have been instrumental in boosting resources and increasing teachers' confidence in delivering engaging science lessons.

Established in 2014, the House of Science concept was born out of the dire need revealed by an ERO report indicating that over 70% of New Zealand schools lacked an effective science program. Since its inception, founder and CEO Chris Duggan and her team have been empowering teachers to deliver captivating science lessons, ensuring that all children have access to quality science education.
