Social Notes from Vice Commodore Dan...

Here we are in mid-August and do we ever have a lot going on!

A bit of news before social highlights…  The Oates Room floor reconstruction is under way and we have lost a small area of our beautiful dining room floor to demolition.  We will soon be missing some chunks of drywall and our galley floor.   But don’t worry… the paneling will be saved!  Your galley crew is dancing around these events with their usual style.   This process will take time and we ask for patience, flexibility and, most of all, careful stepping.  I am certain the end result will be worth the wait.  Or at least dryer!

Now onto the bright future!  Coming up this Friday, August  15th is a Soda Can Race with another coming up 8/29.  Come on out and watch what Peter and Anja are up to and support this new race program at Sequoia.  One of the best places to watch the action will be out by the wharfs.

Also this weekend the Mega Cruise will be taking place in the San Juan Islands.  Good luck and fair seas to those participating!  Hmmm, for the rest of us, more room at the bar!
We will have a Drop-in-Dinner on August 22.  Prior to cocktails and dinner, we will be offering an early evening sail on selected yachts.  If it has been a while since you have been out on the water, come on down!   Dinner will be delicious as usual, but it may be served in a different manner due to construction.  After dinner we will be treated to the tale of Chris and Michele Hartman’s trip south – way south to the Antarctic!

On Wednesday, August 27th, Sequoia Yacht Club will be hosting the Hannig Cup during our Beer Can Race.  If there was ever a Wednesday evening to come and race – this is it.  There will be a trophy for fund raising and an award for the Beer Can race winner.  Later we will have dinner and live music.   So make some time next week to visit the club.

Nominations for 2015

All,

I wanted to notify you of the nominations from the Nominating Committee. I have also posted this on the club bulletin board. I am very pleased at the many members who have agreed to volunteer their time and expertise to provide leadership to this Club.

The nomination and election process is set out in Article X of our current bylaws. For a complete review of the process click here or review them in the Bylaws section of your Club directory.

I would like to thank the Nominating Committee for their efforts and for coming up with such a fine slate of candidates.  The Nominating Committee this year consisted of Deb Blackmore, Past Commodore John Graves (chair), Past Commodore Kate Humphreys, Jim Peterson and Past Commodore Joanne Wright.

The nominating committee would like to nominate the following members for the upcoming club election:

Flag Officers:
Staff Commodore – Winston Bumpus
Commodore – Dan Lockwood
Vice Commodore – Rick Gilmore
Rear Commodore - Tim Petersen
Port Captain - James Brown
Treasurer - Christine Eberle
Secretary - Mrs. Robin Weber

Directors:
George Carr (continuing)
Dennis Lowe (continuing)

These nominations, and any additional nominations from the floor, will be made at the September General Meeting on September 12th. Elections will take place during our October General Meeting and the Installation of the Officers will be at the November General Meeting and Installation Dinner.

Thanks again to our Nominating Committee and our members willing to serve our club.

Hannig Cup - August 27th

This year there is a “bounty” treasure chest of $300 for each person, as well as each boat participating in the race, up to $90,000!  Plus bonus monies for charity based upon participation.

Another big part of the excitement that night are the two races — one for sailboats or virtual boats raising the most money for charity, and the other for the first boat to finish the on-the-water race!  Anyone can center the funds-raising race with a real or virtual boat, as the “winning boat” is the one that raises the most donations!

The cost of the dinner on August 27th is donated by sponsor Joe “Sparky” Bullock/Black Mountain Properties.  Therefore all dinner ticket proceeds directly benefit our youth sailing program.  Seating is limited.  Dinner is $20 for adults and $10 for those 12 and under.  Check availability and make reservations through Kathy Harris at:

Phone:  (650) 207-7198.
Email:  kakyharris@aol.com

Please join us if you are able, and please support the event even if you cannot attend.  SYC Members can use “chit” donations.  Please RSVP.  This event is a great way for us to give back to our local youth and positively impact tens of thousands of people in the world.

Getting Ready for the San Juans

Many of your fellow members are making their way to the San Juan Islands. Next week is our mega-cruise with 7 boats and over 40 people sailing on this cruise. It should be a fun trip sailing amongst the many islands including spending a few days in Canada.

Last week member David Jackson was on a fishing trip in the area and stopped in at the Annacortes Yacht Club to do a burgee exchange with their Vice Commodore MarKay Neuman.

We will be cruising out of Annacortes and have our last night together at the San Juan Island Yacht Club in Friday Harbor.

I will look forward to taking pictures and reporting back to you about this adventure

Ahoy Sailors!

If you are "between boats" and haven't been out on the water for a while or you'd like to go for a sail with your friends but don't feel like rigging up the boat, then come join us.

Friday August 22nd before the DID we will go for a casual one hour sail to decompress from the work week and spend time on the beautiful south bay waters with our friends. After our sail we will return to the club to enjoy a delicious "drop in dinner" and Chris and Michele Hartman's presentation about their exotic trip to Antarctica.
What: Friday Evening Sail.

When: Friday, August 22nd from 5PM until 6PM.
Meet at the club at 4:45PM and we will walk down to the boats from there.

Send me an email and let me know if you'd like to come along or if you'd like to volunteer your boat for the ride.

This is going to be fun!
