Dear Member, In this issue of Kilimani Weekly

A wise leader once said, “Great Leadership is not only marked by Intentions and Actions but also Impact.” How then, has the status of public service delivery impacted your life and business? As a Foundation, we conducted the fourth edition of the Kilimani Public Utility Service Delivery survey to rate Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company, Kenya Power and Lighting Company, National Construction Authority, NEMA, Chief’s Office, Kenya Urban Roads among others. This report will help during our engagement with our appointed leaders as we advocate for issues affecting Kilimani. Catch up with this and so much more in this issue of Kilimani weekly.

The Release of Public Service Delivery Survey

The Planned Development pillar's mandate is to establish a framework for participating in the shaping of balanced urban planning and orderly sustainable development of Kilimani Ward in a way that leaves the community empowered, connected and responsible. The public baraza is an opportunity to discuss urban development within Kilimani Ward and we welcome the attendance of those who live, work and play in Kilimani; including residents, developers, business owners, employees as well as professionals, government and other stakeholders in the Built Environment.

Saturday’s baraza focused on readings for various developments including the BTS in Ole Villas along Ole Ndume Road, VIVO Petrol Station along Maalim Juma, Another proposed Petrol Station along Dennis Pritt road, Alina Valley’s Likoni Lane, Alina Harbour along Kirichwa Road, and Leroghi Gardens Along Mbaazi Avenue, the release of the public service delivery survey conducted before the baraza, a public service panel that include Faith Rapasi (Customer Experience Officer, KPLC) and Stephen Kosgei (Sub-county Administrator Dagoretti North) as well as the launch of the petition for the preparation and finalization of the Kilimani Ward Local Physical Development Plan (LPDP)

We are requesting your help with the LPDP petition. To review and sign the petition, kindly find it HERE.

The Special Kilicycle Waste Collection drive happened last Saturday 17th of September, which was also World clean up day. The Kilicycle team partnered with Let's Do It Kenya and other cooperates and stakeholders to mark the day.

A total number of about 40 people: residents, the county government representatives, Kilicycle partners, corporates which included Carrefour, Sauti Ya Jamii and a team from Let’s Do It Kenya, joined us for this cleanup exercise. We began with a cleanup walk starting from Quickmart, Gitanga road at 9:00am, collecting solid waste along the road up to our Kilicycle waste collection drive location in Kilimani Primary School.

We would like to thank everyone who participated in the clean-up walk and all who dropped off their recyclables at the school. A big  thank you to our partners, Takataka Solutions, Africa Textile Collect, WEEE Center, Bottle Logistics Kenya and T3 Kenya for their continued support.

Have you been tracking this month’s theme: Pitfalls to Avoid as an Entrepreneur? So far we have covered: Legal Pitfalls, Pitfalls in Talent Management and Pitfalls in Planning. For this week, Barbara Omwayi, our Kilipreneur Business Advisor, Sales & Marketing professional shares on PITFALLS IN MARKETING:

1. Lack of a marketing plan
A good percentage of SMEs react based on what competitors are implementing or the market situation, this happens when you don’t have a marketing plan.

Lack of a marketing plan, your company's growth will be slow, and could even stall. There will be very few to no new customers, and existing clients may not even know about your new products or upcoming sales & discounts, reducing their chances of becoming repeat customers.

Understanding these factors and coming up with a plan, will help you focus your marketing approach to suit your customers, as well as understanding your competition is important too.

2. Not understanding your target market
If you don't take time to understand your target market, then it becomes impossible to speak their language or even address their pain points which mean the most to them.

Working towards appealing to a wide audience might sound like a good idea however, the challenge with this one-size-fits-all approach is that your business will no longer seem distinctive. You can personalize your promotions, communications and sales and ads efforts to each potential audience by speaking to their unique interests and needs. Explain to customers how your product or service will meet their needs and also a clear sense of your brand.

3. Lack of proper marketing research
If you do not conduct adequate market research, you are in danger of selling to the wrong people or of not understanding your marketplace. Once you have understood what your customer needs are, it is ideal to use market research to test these needs first.  One of the effective ways of doing market research is carrying out field research to explore customers' profiles and discover buying trends in the market.

4. Marketing to only new customers
Most SMEs think they need as many new customers as they can attract. This is because it is easy to invent creative ways to market your brand to new customers, however marketing is much more than just targeting potential clients; it is also about valuing existing customers.

By targeting your existing customers with a personalized experience that caters to their pain points, it makes you more likely to get back on their radar and close another sale.

Keep these pitfalls in mind and start prioritizing the small things that will have a great impact. By utilizing your existing clients and taking a proactive, focused, and personal approach you’ll start seeing results and growing your business without the risk of feeling overwhelmed or burnt out.

The Global week to #Act4SDGs runs from 16th - 25th September during the high level week of the 77th UN General Assembly which sends a message to world leaders that people and communities worldwide are woke; they are actively attentive to the increasing urban challenges that exist in this era. That they are inspired, motivated and dedicated to make choices and take individual actions that #Act4SDGs.

This is and shouldn’t be, by any means, a FAD or a “bumper sticker” that will peel off after the conclusion of the UN General Assembly. As the Kilimani community, it’s imperative that we realize that our choices and actions, which are so often interlinked, create a ripple effect that will be felt in future generations - be it positive or negative. As a Foundation, we are not only joining millions of people all around the world to #FlipTheScript and #Act4SDGs during this monumental period but will strive to ensure that acting for Sustainable Development Goals continues to be the norm.

Focusing on SDG 3, SDG 6, SDG 7 and SDG 12, we created a Habit Tracker that has simple steps to #Act4SDGs. Here are a few simple habits from our tracker - check the tracker for more!

  • Throughout the coming week, use the stairs instead of the elevators/escalators at work, in the malls or at home.
  • Use natural detergents to clean your house.
  • Switch off lights when not in use.
  • At home, in your estate/court/neighborhood, in the office - advocate for the 4Rs model: REDUCE. REUSE. RECYCLE. REFUSE
  • Avoid consuming highly processed foods.
  • Fill your electric kettle only with the needed amount of water.
  • Switch out your plastic toothbrush for a bamboo one.
  • Walk or use your bicycle instead of your car for shorter distances (this is better for your health and reduces congestion within the city/neighborhood).
  • For longer distances, consider using the train or bus:)
  • Use reusable water bottles to avoid plastic waste.

Will You Join The Movement?
