The Sequoia Yacht Club WInter Series continued on Saturday February 9 with Race #4. There were 13 boats in the race, 10 in the spinnaker division and 3 in the non-spinnaker division.
Saturday brough with it light wind and a big ebb tide. Predictions were for winds of 5 to 8 knots lightening later in the day. A 4.83 mile course was selected of 3/4 - S - 12 - Y - 3/4. With one 15 minute delay the horn sounded and the fleet was off with 8 knots wind and the tide to carry everyone to the first mark. With the fast moving tide a route to 12 started as a reach and soon turned into a run as the boats were pushed West by the current. After 12 on the way to Y the fleet was soon spread out all over the racing area as the current and demishing winds took their toll. The boats at the front had enough wind to round Y and finish at 3/4. It became a very beautiful day if your intension was to have lunch and a glass of wine on calm waters while the San Mateo Bridge loomed closer to your stern.
Congratulations in the spinnaker division to Dare Dare (Nico Popp) for taking first place and Frequent Flyer (Stan Phillips) taking second place. With what turned out to be some creative navigating Sweet Grapes (Alan Orr, Coyote Point YC) traveled well south of marker Y to use the current and what was left of the wind to finish in third, congratulations. A special mention goes out to Pizote (John Ryan) and crew for the Did Not Quit award by staying out on the course and finishing with less than 15 minutes until the race time limit to place fourth. The other 9 boats in the race abandon the race and were scored as DNF.
