Extending Resolution Drive

Story
Story

We've begun building the 1.9km-long Resolution Drive extension which will join Resolution Drive to the Hamilton section of the Waikato Expressway.

It will connect at the Borman Road roundabout.

Once complete, it will provide a convenient connection between the expressway and the city’s north-eastern suburbs - and the planned Rototuna Town Centre.

The extension project includes links for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. Included is a network of off-road, shared walking and biking paths, and a large and open pedestrian/biking underpass under Resolution Drive.

This project is jointly funded by the Hamilton City Council and the NZ Transport Agency. It will open for use in 2020 when the expressway opens.

Currently topsoil is being removed and a layer of rock and sand is being laid to form the foundation for the new road. This will be followed by drainage and pavement works.

We've delayed the reopening of Kay Road until October 2018 so we can complete major roadworks near the intersection with North City Road.

Aerial attack on weeds in gullies

We're using a remote-controlled helicopter to spray weeds in the southern gullies.

It's a two-stage process that allows targeted spraying of noxious and invasive species. First, the drone sprays canopy plants such as woolly nightshade, then returns to spray on-ground weeds once the canopy plants have died off.

Digging under the Gordonton Road Bridge

We're digging out under the Gordonton Road Bridge so our dumptrucks can haul sand south to build the Puketaha Road Bridge. We've already finished digging under the Morrinsville and Osborne Road bridges.

Ground improvements prevent liquefaction

In the Mangaone and Mangaharakeke gullies near SH1-Cambridge Road, we're using a technique called dynamic replacement to strengthen soft ground under bridges and embankments.

Ground improvement prevents soft soils turning to liquid in an earthquake and damaging bridge foundations.

Click on the video below to see how dynamic replacement works.

Preparing to plant

Over the next three winters, we will plant 650,000 new plants along the 22km-long Hamilton Section of the expressway. The first 160,000 seedlings will be planted this winter, starting this month.

Our planting team has spent several months placing mulch on expressway embankments to prepare for planting. Most are native species grown from seed sourced in the Waikato.

Plantings this winter are mainly seedlings on expressway slopes and borders, plus preparation of some grassed areas. Plantings in 2019 and 2020 will include specimen trees near interchanges and bridges, plus wetland species to help treat stormwater runoff from the expressway.

We will also restore 20 hectares within Hamilton's gully system. This involves controlling noxious and invasive species, replanting in native species, and controlling pests.
