How often should I be exercising?

Dear MacWarrior,

Most of us know that being physically active and limiting sedentary behaviour is essential for our health and wellbeing. But what is physical activity? Physical activity is basically anything that gets your body moving, makes your breathing become quicker and heart beat faster.

Weight Loss Warriors was the Turning point for Lucinda’s Lifelong Weight Battle

In August 2013 Lucinda hit her heaviest weight – 123kg.  Having battled with yo-yo dieting and inconsistent exercise habits for years she was still searching for the “magic fix”.

A decision to join Weight Loss Warriors that same year changed everything. For the first time in decades Lucinda weighs below 80kg having lost 45kg over eighteen months. “I’m much stronger than I was and weigh below 80kg – first time in decades.  The two best things though, and huge breakthroughs for me:

  1. I am maintaining my weight.  The one time I was tempted back to my yo-yo ways, my support team at the gym helped me through it.  And –
  2. I’m happy!  No more days when I don’t want to go out of the house; no setbacks have sent me into the usual downward spiral.  I generally have a stupid grin on my face.”

Kids Don't Get Enough Exercise

Australian children are at the greatest risk of becoming sedentary adults. Sedentary habits are becoming one of our most important battles with the growing range of sedentary alternatives to physical activity.

  • An estimated 1.5 million people under the age of 18 are considered overweight or obese. This means about 20-25% of Australian children are overweight or obese
  • Children are getting less aerobic exercise. The amount of aerobic fitness is decreasing by about 0.4% a year
  • Between 1985 and 1997 obesity levels in the population doubled. While obesity increased 2-4 times, being overweight increased 60-70%. This shows signs not just of increasing, but accelerating
  • If weight gain statistics continue along the current path, by the year 2020, 80% of all Australian adults and a third of all children will be overweight or obese
  • 50% of obese adolescents continue to be obese as adults
