dsport dispatch - November 2019
Welcome to our dsport dispatch enewsletter.
Here we will celebrate our successes and profile our members.
Feel free to circulate this far and wide.
We inspire disabled people to believe in themselves. To aspire to being involved in sport and active recreation. To dream. We enable disabled people to get into sport and active recreation. We don’t believe in can’t. Rather how can we. How can we make this fun and make this work? We persevere and we build strength collectively. But more importantly, our members achieve. They overcome adversity, find work-arounds and creative solutions to achieve. And for some, they will achieve their dreams.
Activity Blades Rock!Deanna, Erin and Lennox all received their new Activity Blades from the NZ Artificial Limb Service this year. dsport and NZALS have been working together to provide a series of Kids Get Active Days around the country. The events have helped young amputees and their parents to meet other people who had had similar experiences, and to make connections.
Youth GroupDeanna and Erin, along with 11 other dsport athletes attended the 2019 Halberg Games in Auckland in early October. The team competed in Athletics and Swimming as well as tried a range of different sports including Taekwondo, Golf, Table Tennis, Indoor Rowing, Pickle Ball, Netball and Archery. These games continue to be one of the highlights for our Youth Group members who spend a few months in late winter/early spring training.. The
other highlight for our Youth Group is the end of year camp at El Rancho in Waikanae. Over a weekend, our young members get to experience the fun, excitement and activities which they often miss out on at school camp. These two events are the only separate events we deliver for our young disabled members only. All other Youth Group activities are whanua focussed where we welcome siblings, cousins, friends, even grandparents to participate. Don't be surprised to see our Youth Group en mass at mini golf, rock climbing or ice skating.
David - boccia player. David Harrison has recently completed at the National Boccia Championships which were hosted at the ASB Sports Centre in Kilbirnie. David is ranked 4th in the BC3 category. When David is not training or playing Boccia, he is supports his mother Denise in the Postgate School library. This was the first competition David was able to try out his new boccia balls and ramp. This equipment was purchased with the support from the NZ Racing Board. Getting this gear from Poland and Denmark was a big cost, so we are very thankful for NZRB support.
New Uniforms and Supporters KitPub Charity this year supported our new rebrand by helping us outfit our teams in new uniform. These uniforms were rolled out at the Boccia National Championships and the Halberg Games. Keep an eye out for our supporters gear we'll be launching soon. You too can proudly wear dsport kit and help enable our members.
Advocating for Disability Sport Our Manager, Catriona McBean, has been meeting with MPs - Grant Robertson (Minister of Sport), Carmel Sepuloni (Minister of Disability Issues) and Nikki Wagner (National List MP) - and Min of Education, Min of Health, SportNZ and ACC to profile the work dsport does. The meetings have received very positive feedback and will help champion disability sport among the key
decision-makers. We believe its really important to showcase the great work dsport is doing, particularly in the youth space, as it illustrates how we are overcoming the barriers to participation.
