Undocumented Student Action Week (USAW), October 19-23, 2020, is a system-wide campaign to highlight the importance of supporting undocumented students at California Community Colleges. During the week, we are committed to advocating for legislation that would provide a pathway to citizenship and permanent protections from deportation for undocumented students. While this will continue to be our priority, we understand there are other systematic barriers affecting undocumented students as highlighted in the Dreamers Project Report. This year, the action week partners will focus
our USAW 2020 efforts on highlighting the need for increased access to financial support for undocumented students. Advocacy during the week will include a push for statewide financial aid reform and programs to help more undocumented students receive support, as well as continuing to advocate at the federal level for undocumented students to gain access to federal financial aid. A series of webinars are scheduled and we encourage all colleges to lead their own virtual events and share what they have planned for USAW by emailing us at ActionWeek@foundationccc.org. Information about the webinars, as well as resources for your own local event, can be found at this link.
Promoting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
on Your Campus:Our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Subcommittee has been hard at work bringing professional development training forward at our latest conference and in our regions, alongside continuing to be involved with statewide conversations regarding hiring, curriculum, and evaluation standards. Would you like to know how you can promote this work on your campus? Our Board of Directors recently approved a support statement to solidify our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion values and now you can too! The DEI Subcommittee has created a template for local student body associations to adopt their own statements of support. You can find the template at this link.
Professional Development and TrainingThe SSCCC just completed our week-long free professional development and leadership training from September 24 through October 2, 2020. More than 200 students registered and participated in the 15 workshops offered. Thanks to our system partners – ASCCC, Chancellor’s Office, CCLC, FACCC, RP Group, and TICAS - for presenting key topics such as Student 9+1 rights, legislative advocacy, transfer, and affordability. Other presenters included a member of the legislature, Lorena Gonzales-Fletcher, and the Secretary of State’s Office who presented on the importance of getting out the vote. All the presentations
are posted on the SSCCC YouTube Channel.

SSCCC Fun FactsDid you know that in 1996 the Student Senate was formed? In order to ensure effective student participation in the development of policy for the California Community Colleges System, the Board of Governors adopted §50002 of Title 5 of the California Code of Regulations which states: "A Student Senate for the California Community Colleges has been established in conjunction with local associated student organizations so that the community college students of California may have a formal and effective means for participation in the
formation of state policies that have or may have a significant impact on students….The Board of Governors recognizes the Student Senate for the California Community Colleges as the representative of community college associated student organizations before the Board of Governors and the Chancellor's Office."
