Barnard Elementary joins our fellow Americans in remembering those that serve our country - past and present. It's not just a "day off" from school. Memorial Day has deep meaning and significance in our nation's history. Memorial Day was originally established in 1868, three years after the Civil War, to honor our fallen veterans. The first date chosen was May 30th. It was believed that this date was selected because most flowers were in bloom at that time, and the original intent was to "decorate the graves of the dead with flowers." Explore Memorial Day with your child to better understand why this date became an important observation to Americans.
