SYLVIA GARCIA SCORES AFL-CIO AND TOP ENDORSEMENTS

Monday, Harris County AFL-CIO COPE Members met with Senate District 6 candidates and in a LANDSLIDE VICTORY voted Sylvia Garcia as the leader they know will fight for fair jobs, healthcare and education in Austin.“Sylvia Garcia has been a strong supporter of working families issues from her days with City of Houston to Commissioners Court.  She has the experience and knowledge to represent the people of District 6 and will address critical needs like education and healthcare.  Sylvia will be an outstanding Senator for the State of Texas," said Richard Shaw, Harris County AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer.

Thursday, Texas Organizing Project members joined AFL-CIO in the ring with Sylvia. “This endorsement is extremely important because it means boots on the ground for our campaign," said Garcia. "Sylvia has been a constant ally. Whether as county commissioner or most recently as a leader in our community, she has been a strong advocate. I'm pleased that others in my organization share my optimism for Garcia's candidacy," said Steven Halvorson, a TOP leader from Pasadena.

His sentiments were echoed by TOP leader and Denver Harbor resident Maria James, "I want someone that will not only fight for us, but be able to work across the aisle to get support from others in the Texas Senate. We need a fighter—someone who will stand their ground for the people of SD-6," added James.

NOTE FROM SYLVIA

Sunday I was sitting at church when I felt a hand grab mine. An elderly man slipped something into my hand and gave me a hug. When I got home, I opened the envelope and inside was a small contribution and a note that said “Go get them"!

Later that day I went block walking. When I knocked on a door a man answered and before I could say anything he said, "Hay Sylvia! I've been waiting for you! I am ready to vote for you - when is the election? We need you in Austin!”

Moments like these, I am reminded why I am running. I am honored to have both the AFL-CIO and TOP endorsements and most importantly the support of working families in Harris County. Having these endorsements speaks directly to why we have to have a State Senator that will stand with our families and fight for better jobs. We will not stand quietly by while the Governor cuts public education and refuses health dollars that puts hundreds of thousands of people in Harris County without health insurance. These groups know my priorities are their priorities and I will fight for them.  I look forward to seeing you at the Campaign headquarters opening tomorrow.
