Monday, Harris County AFL-CIO COPE Members met with Senate District 6 candidates and in a LANDSLIDE VICTORY voted Sylvia Garcia as the leader they know will fight for fair jobs, healthcare and education in Austin.“Sylvia Garcia has been a strong supporter of working families issues from her days with City of Houston to Commissioners Court. She has the experience and knowledge to represent the people of District 6 and will address critical needs like education and healthcare. Sylvia will be an outstanding Senator for the State of Texas," said Richard Shaw, Harris County AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer.
Thursday, Texas Organizing Project members joined AFL-CIO in the ring with Sylvia. “This endorsement is extremely important because it means boots on the ground for our campaign," said Garcia. "Sylvia has been a constant ally. Whether as county commissioner or most recently as a leader in our community, she has been a strong advocate. I'm pleased that others in my organization share my optimism for Garcia's candidacy," said Steven Halvorson, a TOP leader from Pasadena.
His sentiments were echoed by TOP leader and Denver Harbor resident Maria James, "I want someone that will not only fight for us, but be able to work across the aisle to get support from others in the Texas Senate. We need a fighter—someone who will stand their ground for the people of SD-6," added James.
