Protect yourself and others: Niagara Region Public Health shares advice for respiratory illness season

October 7, 2025

With the flu currently circulating in Niagara and respiratory illness season underway, Niagara Region Public Health is reminding residents to take simple steps to stay healthy. Common respiratory illnesses like the flu, COVID-19 and RSV can cause serious complications, especially for young children, older adults, and those with existing health conditions.

“Taking preventive action now can make a real difference,” said Dr. Azim Kasmani, Niagara Region’s Medical Officer of Health. “Staying up to date with seasonal vaccines, washing your hands regularly, and maintaining clean and well-ventilated spaces are simple but effective ways to reduce the spread of illness and protect those most at risk.”

Residents are encouraged to get their seasonal vaccines as soon as they’re available. Vaccine availability may vary, so residents are advised to call ahead to confirm supply with their health care provider or pharmacy.

Vaccine availability

  • Free flu shots and COVID-19 vaccines will be available starting the end of October for everyone 6 months of age and older who lives, works or goes to school in Ontario
  • As of early October, flu and COVID-19 vaccines are available for high-risk and priority populations as supply becomes available. This includes residents and staff in hospitals, long-term care homes, and other congregate care settings. Vaccines will also be offered through primary care providers and participating pharmacies.
  • RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) immunizations are available now for eligible individuals and can be booked through your health care provider.

Additional steps to stay healthy

Along with vaccination, using multiple layers of protection helps reduce the risk of respiratory infections:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, or use hand sanitizer
  • Cough or sneeze into your elbow or a tissue, not your hands
  • Ensure good ventilation; keep indoor air fresh and circulating
  • Consider wearing a mask, especially in crowded or enclosed space
  • Employers are encouraged to allow staff to stay home when sick

Talk to your health care provider or visit our website for more information about respiratory illnesses and where to get vaccinated in Niagara.
