LCC eNews January 2017

Welcome to 2017! It's hard to believe the New Year is already here. The end of 2016 was a busy few months for everyone at Lutheran Community Care, with our Christmas Hampers, Christmas Appeal and several events all taking place. Here's a brief summary of what you might have missed.

Christmas donations

In the lead up to Christmas, 930 Christmas Hampers were delivered to families across Adelaide, the Barossa and the Northern Territory. This was an increase from 895 hampers last year. A big thank you to everyone who donated items and made Christmas that little bit brighter for families in need. Thank you also to those who contributed to our Christmas Appeal. The funds raised will help make a difference in the lives of many. Image: Christmas Hampers in the Barossa.

CVS celebrates 25 years

Congratulations to the Community Visitors Scheme, which recently celebrated 25 years of service visiting people in residential aged care facilities and those in the community who are socially isolated. There were celebrations held for our volunteers and coordinators, including three visitors, who have been active participants in the scheme for 25 years. What an achievement! Volunteer numbers continue to grow

In the 2015/16 financial year, LCC had 577 registered volunteers who gave 48,674 hours worth at least $1,139, 957.49. We support volunteers in various roles through our op shops, emergency relief service delivery, financial counselling, administration, living skills sessions, support groups and much more. Volunteers have always been central to the heart and vision of Lutheran Community Care and we thank them for their invaluable work.

Fossils concert fundraiser

The musical fundraiser we held in October was a huge success, with over 300 people attending the event featuring Fossils (Folkies of the Sixties Sing Iconic Legendary Songs). It was an enjoyable concert and many commented on the high quality of the performance. Thank you to the Fossils for donating their time. The funds raised will support families in both SA and NT.

New Neighbours launch film

The New Neighbours program, through its ongoing engagement with the Afghan Youth of SA, developed and launched a powerful film titled ‘Nowhere’ in September. The film explores themes of family, loyalty, gender roles, secret relationships and forced marriage in Afghan new arrival families to Australia. It has been acclaimed for tackling challenging issues in a highly engaging and well-produced format.

Landscape of Voices conferences

In September, we held two-day staff conferences in both SA and NT. This year’s theme was ‘A Landscape of Voices’, which encouraged us to listen to the voices of others and find our own voice. The conferences are an important opportunity to take some time to refresh and renew in the company of colleagues who share the same passion of making a difference.
