IN THE DISTRICT

Summer Meals for Children
For many children, summertime means food, friends and fun. For families who count on school breakfast and lunch, however, the summer months can be stressful and family food budgets have to be stretched even further. Summer is also a critical time for kids and teens’ academic and physical development.  But during the summer, they can lose out on several months of learning and physical activity that they would normally get at school. Youth 18 years and younger can received free summer meals in numerous locations throughout our community.  Local partners provide the locations and staff to serve up to two meals a day.  Families can find a site by visiting www.summerfood.org, texting FOOD to 877-877 or calling 211.

Texas Armed Services Scholarship

Every year, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board awards the Texas Armed Services Scholarship to students across the State interested in public service through the armed services. Students can be awarded up to $10,000 annually, and must be nominated by a State Representative or Senator. If you know of a high school or college student who is passionate about the armed services and lives in Senate District 6, please have them submit an application to my office by midnight on May 15th. They must meet several academic criteria, enroll in the ROTC program of their college of choice, and commit to service in the armed forces upon graduation. Click here to download the application. If you have any questions, please call my staff member, Isabel Longoria, at 713-884-8797.
