First Nations’ culture and history were incorporated into many classes, including Food Technology where they watched an Aboriginal elder make bush tucker and then included native spices into their dishes. The very moving, acclaimed film ‘In my Blood it Runs’ was shown to some SOSE classes as well as the Aboriginal group during ILT. Reconciliation Week 2020 concluded with a whole-school zoom assembly for our Principal Mrs O’Meara to award our newly appointed Aboriginal Captains, Abbey Lamb and Kiara Allan with their Captains badges. Thanks to all involved in helping us recognise the importance of Reconciliation and moving forward together as one. Annie Daley In and Around JPCVirtual Engagement with the US EmbassyHow does the US Constitution influence the behaviours of US citizens and how does it tie into the strongly felt concepts of freedom and liberty? How does the US’s voluntary voting system compare to Australia’s compulsory system – is a voluntary system better or worse? How can we improve relations between the West and North Korea? How will the world bounce back economically from the Corona virus? These are the types of questions that students from Year 9 - 12 had the opportunity to explore in our recent virtual engagement with the US Embassy. The various class’ met with, Political, Economic and Military Officers from the US Embassy to discuss our current units of work. A key part of the Senior School at JPC is the development of critical and analytical thinking skills and the engagement with issues that affect people locally, nationally and internationally. Our virtual engagement was a fantastic opportunity to develop these skills with an engaging and stimulating discussion of the similarities and differences between the US and Australian Legal and Political systems, controversial recent global events and our shared democratic values. JPC thanks Linda Johnson, Thomas Billingsley, JP Hesford and Mark Bissonnette (Assistant Public Diplomacy Officer – US Embassy) for organising this engagement, and for helping create such vibrant and enlivening experiences for our students! Arts up FrontCinderella Lives on – with Shirts! This week, we excitedly welcomed the whole cast of Cinderella back! First thing on the agenda? T-Shirts! The cast – students and teachers alike – proudly wore their shirts for the rehearsal on Wednesday. Whilst, we are unable to continue preparing for our Production, we are able to continue the development of performance skills. Miss Allan challenged the group to rounds of scales; they exceeded expectations, smashing the challenge in the first attempt. Following this, students we able to develop their improvisation skills with Mrs Smith. The theme for the afternoon’s session was fairytale mania. Students created images of fairytales and rewrote the plot of some popular stories. The outcomes were surprising but hilarious! These creative rewrites will be our starting point for developing characterisation and more performance skills next week. It is great to have the cast together again. The show must go on!
