The Regent Digest: Week 4, Term 2 2018 No Images? Click here 20 May 2018
Dear Regent Families Welcome to the Regent Digest! I hope you've been able to enjoy the beautiful weather. It certainly has permitted steady progress in site works over the last few weeks. If you've not yet had opportunity to read our new blog, "According to plan", please do. The intention is to convey some of the stories and context to the building process. We love to tweak the learning program throughout the year and we've decided to boost our numbers of Apple iPads in years 3-6. While iPads have been on the diet at Regent College for some time, the injection of additional devices will strategically support technology integration in classrooms is using the SAMR Model as a framework. If you would like to learn more, there is a simple example HERE. Thanks to families and staff for a super commencement to Term 2; it really has been terrific. A reminder that if you would appreciate prayer or like to join the parent prayer group, you're more than welcome each Tuesday morning following the bell. Feel free to wait around in the Piazza area, behind Administration. Blessings Derek Nicholls
Kindergarten 1, 2, and 3Q. Is a dinosaur an animal? This fortnight in Numeracy, we are focusing on our number recognition 1-10, ordering these numbers and counting on. In Literacy, we have started identifying the initial sounds in words and generating words that rhyme. We are so excited to be going on our very first excursion in a couple of weeks. I wonder what amazing animals we will find! Mrs Huxley and Pre-Primary 1This term in Pre-Primary, we are learning about different cultures from around the world as part of our integrated HASS and English program. We started our journey in Western Australia and focused on where Australia, Western Australia, Perth and Victoria Park are all located on map books and Google Maps. We learnt about different cities and the native animals that live in Australia. We then moved on to Indonesia and learnt a lot about the country and culture. We thought it was so interesting that Indonesia is not just one big country like Australia, but it is made up of many different islands! We learnt about some native animals like the Komodo dragon, Sumatran Tiger and the Java Orangutan! Miss Beath also taught us how to count to 10, say different greetings and colours in the Bahasa Indonesian language. We are excited to embark on our next part of our world journey when we explore the countries of China and Burma! We are looking forward to hearing from some of our peers in teaching about the Chinese and Burmese culture and teach us how to speak some Mandarin and Burmese. Miss Beath Pre Primary 2This week we commenced river school! The Pre-Primary 2 students, (with a few lovely parent helpers), wandered down to the river to explore, using their senses. During this first river school we featured our sense of sight. The students used the magnifying glasses to find ten interesting objects. After this we came back together to discuss what we had found and sort them into groups. We then had further exploring time and discovered the amazing jellyfish! After being so interested in the jellyfish we came back to school and researched about them to answer our many questions! Come and look at our river school book to see what we discovered! Miss Baker Pre-Primary 3In Pre-Primary 3 we ended Term 1 with a celebratory Mini Art Exhibition, displaying our self-portrait work over the term. We invited out families along to view our work, including The Best Part of Me project. This project allowed the children to engage in the self-confidence building exercise of considering how wonderful and creative their bodies are! We have had a busy start to Term 2, beginning with ANZAC Day commemorations. The children created some art to represent the red poppy as the flower of remembrance. In Week 2 we celebrated Mother’s Day with an afternoon of pampering for our Mums! Thank you, wonderful Mums for coming along and getting involved so joyfully. Our theme this term is “Me on the Map”. We will be exploring countries and cultures that the children and their families have connections with. Each week we board our pretend airplane and zoom off to another location. So far we have investigated Australian, Indonesian and Indian culture and we will be moving on again each Monday. The Airport role play centre in our classroom provides opportunities to consolidate communication, collaboration and writing skills. Mrs Coffey Year OneOn the first day back this term, the Year 1s discovered a strange machine in our school! There was lots of noise and movement in the morning, it was very exciting. We decided to take a closer look at the machine and what it was doing. We found that we could get a pretty good view from the upstairs veranda, so we set ourselves up with paper and clipboards and started sketching. Some of us drew what we could see and some drew what we imagined our school might look like. We then walked around to the nature playground to get a different perspective. Here are some of our observations:
Miss Shaw Year OneThe Year 1 students have been developing their technical skills in Visual Art by using watercolours. Some of the skills they have learnt is how to mix colours to make new colours, how to select different size brushes for certain techniques and when to use more water during painting. To commemorate ANZAC Day, we used our new watercolour skills to paint a poppy artwork. Our artwork incorporated red and purple poppies. The red poppies are a symbol of remembrance for the soldiers who fought in the war. We also discovered that purple poppies symbolise the animals who served alongside the soldiers. Miss Jongeling Year TwoWe have enjoyed a busy start to the term and have been ‘wondering about water’. The students have written water poems using their five senses. In Digital technologies they created their own storyboards showing how to conserve water. We went on a water walk around the school to locate the water sources and then recorded them on a map. We had a visit from the Water Corporation and the students enjoyed learning about waste water and what happens to it. Some students enjoyed mixing a variety of materials into a container of water to demonstrate what goes down our drains. We predicted what would happen to water falling on different surfaces and then completed our investigation outside. We also conducted an experiment to see how rainwater is stored in the ground. We used different types of sponges and predicted which sponge would hold the most water. Mrs Jenkins Year ThreeOver the past two weeks the Year 3s have been sad, excited, nervous and proud all at the same time. Sad, because we pulled our space stations apart, but not before we took photos and recorded our narratives on Seesaw. Excited, because we successfully persuaded Mr Nicholls to allow us to play Knuckles in the playground by writing him a persuasive letter. A big thank you to Mr Nicholls for visiting our classroom to discuss our request and for allowing Regent students to play Knuckles on Wednesdays. Further details about this game will be provided soon. We've also been nervous about our NAPLAN tests, but extremely proud of our effort to do our best. In Science we are embarking on an investigation into Feathers, Fur or Leaves? So, in Week 5 we are going to Perth Zoo with Mrs Johnston, Mr Wickham and parent volunteers. We will be getting up close and personal with a few scaly creatures and enjoying a day at our wonderful Zoo. Mrs Johnston Year FourThe Year 4 Camp at Boshack! We stopped outside Toodyay to have recess, play and stretch our legs. For some of us, we got to feed horses for the very first time - quite a messy activity! After three very full days of activities, we sadly stood beside Lake Serene for the last group photo before getting on the bus for our homeward journey. Mrs Innes Year FiveThis term has been off to a steady start in Year 5! We have begun investigating the countries of North and South America in Geography, with each student researching their own country to find out about its natural characteristics. In Maths, we digitally created a map of the country we are researching with a grid over the top. We found a range of natural features and drew them onto our maps. We also learnt how to work out the scale for our maps, which was quite challenging! We are using the maps to give directions to different places using directional language. In English, we reflected on our narrative writing from Term 1, and learnt about how we can "dig deeper" to create more interesting, effective and engaging stories. We have also enjoyed writing some persuasive texts and peer-assessing them in preparation for NAPLAN! Miss Masters Year SixRecently, the River Rangers visited Penguin Island to learn about the biology, natural behaviours, habitat and conservation of penguins. We went on a Penguin and Sea Lion Cruise and managed to see dolphins swimming around in the water along with Sea Lions lying in the sun. It as an adventurous and fun day catching the ferry to the island and looking around at such amazing habitat. This term we worked hard to relocate the garden beds and set them up in the Piazza. We have planted new plants and are looking forward to seeing the plants grow. In our Chemical Science topic, students are planning and conducting experiments which investigate changes to materials to discover which changes are reversible or irreversible. Mrs Lotsos CybersafetyAt regular intervals throughout the year, each class will discuss the issues surrounding staying safe on the internet. In Year 1 and 2 the solution is relatively simple; only visit sites that you are allowed e.g. mathletics. In Year 3 we begin the journey of building a “Budde” robot. This is an Australian Government sponsored program which takes the students through a succession of concepts, reinforced through the playing of games; to build their “Budde”. The students have so far learned about virus scanning and firewalls and more recently about how to build a strong password. These concepts will be built upon and reinforced over the next few years. It is also important for parents to ensure their own knowledge is current and informed. If you would like to brush up on your skills in how to stay safe and how to keep your children safe while on the internet, try visiting this link: iparent or google iparent.
