Portrait of a Teenage Territorian

The NCCA invites teenagers from around the Northern Territory to submit photographic portraits of themselves or their friends, for inclusion in our upcoming exhibition, Portrait of a Teenage Territorian, in July 2020 at our gallery in Parap.

The aim of Portrait of a Teenage Territorian is to show teenagers as they see themselves, on their own terms. We are looking for portraits that show artistic flair and creativity and go beyond selfies and headshots to explore the character, times and places of teens in the NT today. Photographs that have been photoshopped or otherwise digitally manipulated are welcome.

Launched in 2019, 2020 will be the second year that the NCCA will hold this exhibition, with the support of the Northern Territory Government Community Benefit Fund.

Are you a teenager interested in submitting, or an educator/youth organizer interested in getting involved? Email the NCCA for more information at:
portrait@nccart.com.au

We are accepting entries until Friday 12 June 2020.

Introducing Local BBoy -  David James

1. How did you get into break dancing?  It was when I was 9, my dad and Tricky were really good friends and my dad tried to get me into flipping classes at Express Studios because I really loved doing flips. So I went in and at first, I did flipping classes and tricky said I should have a go at breaking. So, I tried and after a couple of months of breaking, I stopped then did gymnastics for a bit. I went back to breaking and on the first day I came back, I learned so many moves and I heard there was a breaking comp in Melbourne so I trained hard and just got really into breaking.

2. Best experience you had at an event or trip that didn’t have anything to do with the competition? The best experience I’ve had is when I went to compete in Melbourne because that was my first battle and I got to learn what battles are like and I got to have a lot of fun meeting all the Bboys that came.

3. The greatest thing about jams nowadays, and the worst? The greatest thing about jams is that everyone gets to have fun and cheers you on and when you do a good move everyone gets hype, even if you're not good.

4. What songs are on repeat on your listening list right now? Most of the time its Bboy beats on YouTube. There is this channel called Bboy music 4 life and that’s what we mostly listen to.

5. You’re in the final of a competition, and you get to pick one superpower, which one would it be and why? My superpower would be super strength because if I had super strength I would be able to do lots of power and flips.

6. What is your favourite move and why? My favourite move is a headspin because I’m always on my head and when I do sets I always like to go onto my head and do headspins.

7. If you could pick any other thing to be as good in as you are in breaking what would you pick? I would do soccer if I could do any other thing because I’m really good at soccer I find it really fun.

8. You get to pick 4 dancers for the ultimate 2vs2 battle (they can be present or from the past), who would you pick and why? I would pick Bboy Hong 10 and Bboy Pocket on one team and Bboy Lilzoo and Bboy Victor on the other team.

9. You’re one of the legends in the lineup, does that give you extra pressure? How do you deal with pressure for events and competition in general? Um, it depends because when you do lots of battles and events you get used to the pressure but when you start breaking you don’t really know what to expect.

10. What advice would you give someone that's interested in learning to breakdance? I would say to not think about how long it would take to get good and when you train try really push yourself and get lots of knowledge down.

Palmerston Youth Outreach

Larrakia Nations, PaRBA Youth Drop In Sports, YMCA Palmerston Youth Space and City of Palmerston have participated in the Palmerston School Holidays Youth Outreach program in conjunction with Northern Territory Government.

YMCA Palmerston Youth Space team have been cooking meals and delivered 91 breakfast and lunches daily. Activity packs were created and delivered to kids to keep them occupied and safe at home. Struggling families received food hampers and 50 kids received Easter egg bags. They were even able to provide some outreach trips (completely within the COVID19 guidelines) taking small groups of at-risk kids out fishing, bike riding or to help us at the Youth Space. This outreach has been requested by young people and their parents/guardians who either need a break from being in the house consistently or need some relief from heightened teenagers.

Shack and the PaRBA team have been delivering food provided by Cazalys Palmerston Club, activity packs and checking in and connecting with the young people who access the Youth Drop in Sports program which normally operates from the Palmerston Recreation Centre. With support from Eva Lawler MLA: Member for Drysdale and Tony Sievers MLA: Member for Brenna, Larrakia and PaRBA were able to distribute 80 dinners daily throughout Palmerston. As well as this 37 Easter gift baskets were shared, along with activity packs, hand sanitiser, basketballs, snack packs, clothes and service provider information. As the Team are getting around suburbs they have taken that opportunity to remove graffiti of street signs as they come across it.

Thank you to everyone involved!! #palmyproud
