Key Messages Week 1 - Term 4Feast Day 2019 Next Friday, 25 October, we will be recognising the feast of our patron, St. John Paul II, with a wonderful day of community activities. Feast Day is an important time for us to come together and celebrate the centrality of community to our Catholic school. The structure of the day will differ from our regular timetable, with students assembling in Houses for a morning of focus activities to start the day. At 10am, we will gather as a College community for a whole school Thanksgiving Eucharist. Parents, carers and family members are warmly invited to attend, and we ask that you RSVP to the College office, office.jpc@cg.catholic.edu.au, by Wednesday to assist with planning. Students are required to attend school in full summer uniform for the formal part of the day’s celebration. At the conclusion of Mass, students are invited to change into their full PE uniform for the afternoon’s activities, which will begin with the Feast Day Championship. Following this, our annual carnival stalls will operate. House groups have been busily preparing a range of games and activities for students to interact with, and all money raised from these will go towards our contribution to the work of Catholic Missions, the focus of October’s Mission Month. Tokens for stalls will cost 50c and can be purchased via the College office during breaks from Tuesday to Thursday of next week. Feast Day is a highlight of our school year, and it is a compulsory school day for all students. House points will be awarded for attendance and participation. We look forward to gathering as a community next Friday for this joy-filled occasion. Mrs. Nicola Edghill Acting Assistant Principal In and Around the School Timor-Leste Outreach 2019 In the second week of the holidays, Mr. David Johns and Mrs Carly Conlan travelled to Timor-Leste to run a workshop for Timorese secondary teachers. This was part of an ongoing outreach program, funded by the Australian National University and facilitated by the Diocese of Maliana, Timor-Leste. The program has been running since 2016 and is continuously evolving, in response to the self-defined professional needs of the teachers involved in the program. The focus of this year’s workshop was to support Timorese teachers to develop and use best-practice classroom management strategies and inquiry-based learning approaches, in the challenging conditions of a typical Timorese classroom. Each of the teachers developed a plan that demonstrated how they intended to use what they had learnt during the workshop, which they presented in the Tetun language. These presentations were compiled in video format and will be distributed to other teachers in the Maliana Dioceses, as a professional development resource. The teachers were also delighted to each receive a draw string bag, handmade by students from Mrs Alana Haines’ Year 8 Textile class. Additionally, David Johns and Carly Conlan presented a mountain of soccer gear, generously donated by the JPC community, to the under 14s Maliana soccer team. The coach and team members were incredibly grateful to receive this, much needed, gear. Many of the children were playing in boots and clothes that were extremely worn, and many did not have proper gear at all. Poverty is a major issue in Timor-Leste and it is wonderful to see that even the most under-privileged children can play Soccer through contributions such as these. David Johns and Carly Conlan would like to send heart-felt thank you to everyone who generously donated their old gear to these children. SPORTS DEVELOPMENT & YEAR 11 EXERCISE SCIENCE RECOVERY TECHNOLOGIES INCURSION On Wednesday, we welcomed Cameron Haines (husband to our lovely Mrs Haines) into JPC to teach the Sports Development and Year 11 Exercise Science students about the varying recovery technologies available for amateur and elite athletes. Students learnt about the technologies and their functions, their benefits and spent time gaining the full experience of using some of the most sought after recovery technologies in sport today. Some of these technologies were:
A huge thank you to Cameron for joining us and providing us with a valuable learning experience. Cameron is the owner of, Motion Fitness and Rehabilitation. As well as having a mobile service, he runs a centre in Charnwood that facilitates small group training, open gym training and semi-private personal training Arts students see Chicago The Musical in Sydney Wednesday this week, 50 Arts students from Years 7 – 12, travelled to Sydney to see Chicago The Musical at Capitol Theatre. The amazing performance stars Natalie Bassingthwaighte, Alinta Chidzey (from Canberra), Casey Donovan and Tom Burlinson. Students were ‘bright-eyed and bushy-tailed’ upon our 7am departure from the College. Once we arrived in Sydney, students walked through Hyde Park seeing the beauty of nature before being “razzle dazzled” by the perfection of the performance! From the very opening scene to the final bows, the audience was captivated by the precision and polish of the performance. An extremely professional cast danced, sang and even climbed ladders on stage for the two-hour performance! The band was outstanding; positioned centerstage and framed in gold, they were an integral part of the show and even helped with the humorous moments in the script. Students sang along, roared with applause and awe, and had countless favourite moments to remember! Each student represented the College will pride and respect. They were able to demonstrate their passion for performance and have a memorable experience of a highly professional production as its nation-wide tour begins. Thank you to each student who shared the day together to continue fostering the close-knit community and culture of Arts students at the College. Thank you to Miss Sharon Robinson for her organisation of the trip, Miss Ellie Mostyn and Mrs Sarah Smith who attend the excursion as well. Stay tuned for the next big trip to Sydney to see School of Rock to further the exciting experiences for JPC Arts students! Year 11 Religious Studies – Focus on Homelessness On Thursday, our Year 11 Social Justice class had the privilege of working with Therese Canty from the St. Vincent de Paul Society, as they continue their case study of homelessness as a significant social justice issue in Australia. Therese is an expert in the nature of homelessness in the ACT, and has worked in a variety of capacities of engagement with services that provide support to those who face this difficult predicament. Through her engaging and interactive presentation, students were able to gain insights into the various ways that homelessness is measured, and the reasons behind why people may find themselves in crisis situations. Exploring the reality of homelessness, and the limited services available to these individuals, was an eye-opening experience for this class, and helps them to frame their study of the issue in relation to social justice. It was particularly fitting that this exploration occurred during Anti-Poverty Week (13 – 19 October). We would like to thank Therese for her insightful and informative presentation and to highlight the significant role that the St. Vincent de Paul Society plays in providing support to the most vulnerable members of our human family. Well done boys! Sport PE Uniform, Injuries and Notes As a PE team, we are experiencing a number of students coming to school without their PE uniforms due to injury. While we appreciate the information and notes to explain particular circumstances, we wanted to enlighten you on our wonderful talents as PE teachers. The beauty of our training and experience is that we are able to modify activities in order to reduce harm and involve all students in our lessons, despite injury. We ask that students who are injured come with a note to provide us with information BUT also with their PE uniform in order to be actively involved in physical education lessons. A reminder that the PE uniform includes the JPC branded top, shorts/trackpants/tights and a change of socks and joggers with no alterations. Uniform discrepancies then follow our ‘strike’ system:
We appreciate your support and look forward to enriching all students through the physical activity curriculum. Artwork of the Week This week’s Art work of the week is a sample of digital images that Ethan Gamble (Yr 7- Vanier) has drawn over the holiday period. Although Ethan does not study visual art at JPC yet, he is very enthusiastic about his work, improving his skills and trying new techniques. Ethan is looking forward to showcasing more of his artistic abilities when he completes his Arts electives next year. Many of Ethan’s drawings are characters that he has designed or taken inspiration from the novels that he reads. If you want to be an artist-in-the-spotlight and would like your artwork to be considered for the next ‘artwork of the week’, please make your submission to Ms Swart with a small statement to explain your work. You don’t need to be enrolled in an Arts course to participate. Give it a go and get creating! Vicki Walsh, DSM Careers Mentoring Term 4 – Career Pathway Focus Dear Parent/Carers, The Australian Government has recently set out a National Career Education Strategy – Future Ready, for all Australian school students. “The vision of Future Ready is that every student in every school has access to high‑quality career education to help them make a successful transition from school to further education, training, work or a combination of these.” https://www.education.gov.au/national-career-education-strategy As part of the implementation of this strategy, JPC will add a career pathway focus this term to our innovative mentoring program. Teachers will be asked to conduct mentoring sessions with students from Year 7 to Year 12 that focus on careers. We believe the sooner you have discussions around career pathways with your sons/daughters, the better the outcome will be regarding job futures. We would appreciate you supporting this initiative at home. Ian Pettit JPC Specialised Pathways Advisor Year 10's Work Experience Application Deadline 15 November During Week 7 of Term 4 (25th of November to the 29th of November), Year 10 students will have the option to do Work Experience outside of school, as JPC continues to expand Work Experience and Australian School Based Apprenticeships (ASBA) opportunities. All of the associated paperwork is located in Moodle under 'Careers'. If your child is interested in doing Work Experience in Week 7, all necessary forms need to be filled in and either emailed to the JPC office (office.jpc@cg.catholic.edu.au) attention Natasha Bramham or handed into Mrs Bramham, located in the student hub by the end of Week 5 (15 November).
