Reconciliation is a word that we are hearing often in the media, in our workplaces, and around our dinner tables. Indigenous people across the country have varying and sometimes conflicting relationship with the word #reconciliation. How can we collectively get to a point that we believe in and are meaningfully engaging in the work of reconciliation? Want to continue this conversation about #reconciliation? This is always a great time and the Métis cultural community celebration is open to everyone to attend! See our poster below... Reconciliation Speaker Series - We are thrilled to announce our amazing Indigenous speakers who will be launching our Reconciliation Speaker Series; Dr. Evan Adams will be coming to speak about the TRC Calls to Action on health. He is coming to Mary Hall in Nelson on Wednesday March 7th at 7pm. Here is a video entitled Wellness, two-eyed seeing and system change We are delighted to have Dr. Leroy Littlebear come back on April 4th to share his perspectives on Indigenous worldviews in education and implementing the education TRC calls to action. Tickets will be available soon for the Civic Theatre. Stay tuned for details! Ongoing Programming with Aboriginal Services Cultural Expressions with Ann-Marie Cultural Expressions continues every Thursday at the Gathering Place in Castlegar from 10-2pm, Join us for crafts, storytelling, legends and teachings. All supplies and a light lunch provided. All students, staff, and potential students are welcome. Ann-Marie will be continuing to alternate weeks between Trail and Nelson 10th st campus on Wednesdays from 11-2pm. She will coming to the Silverking campus on March 14th from 2:30-4:00pm. Ann-Marie will be visiting our learning centres on a Monday from 11-2pm, Kaslo on March 19th, Grand Forks on March 26th, and Nakusp on April 9th. For prospective Selkirk College students that are interested in attending Cultural Expressions, please contact Jessica Morin at jmorin@selkirk.ca for information. Indigenous Drumming at the Gathering Place Join our Facilitator, Shemmaho Goodenough, an Elder Singer and drummer is a mentor teacher for Indigenous Songs. Join us at the Gathering Place to honour the achievements of our Indigenous graduates with their families, a large group of our Elders, as well as our Aboriginal College community. Deadline for application is March 31st, 2018, and this is open to all Aboriginal students, First Nations (status/non-status), Métis, and Inuit students. For certificates and diplomas, awards range form $1000-$2000 depending on length of program. Get in touch if you need help with the application! The RBC Aboriginal Scholarship is due February 28th 9:00pm (PST). You have the potential to earn $4000 towards your learning journey. For more Aboriginal Funding Opportunities... External Aboriginal Community Events & Opportunities Theatre for Living presents šxʷʔam̓ət (home) an interactive audience play about Reconciliation hosted at LV Rogers High school Nelson on Thursday Feb. 22. This is a good opportunity to explore this idea of reconciliation that we hear so much about, especially for those of us wondering - how can I be part of creating real change and what is my role in reconciliation?
