April 2026 Newsletter

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

This March, as we marked Women’s History Month, I found myself reflecting not only on how far we have come, but on how much work still lies ahead. Across the peace and security field, women continue to push boundaries, challenge exclusion, and claim space in rooms where they have historically been absent.

At WIIS, this month was a powerful reminder of why our work matters. From engaging in global conversations at the 70th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70) in New York, to launching our mentorship program that connects and supports the next generation of leaders, we saw firsthand the strength, ambition, and resilience within our community.

Yet, progress is not guaranteed. In many parts of the world, gender equality is facing renewed backlash, and the inclusion of women in security and decision-making spaces remains uneven. This is why our mission must remain active, intentional, and forward-looking.

We celebrate Women’s History Month to not only honor the past, but shape the future. It is about ensuring that women are not just present, but heard, valued, and leading. At WIIS, we are committed to continuing this work alongside all of you by building a community that not only supports women, but actively transforms the systems in which they operate.

Thank you for being part of this effort.

Warm regards,

Dr. Lauren Van Metre
