Lemon: the Grown-Up Way

Lemon Drops

Pucker up for a lemon drop: try one made with Grey Goose and Earth & Vine’s Meyer Lemon Beverage Elixer. To make the ultimate lemon drop, add 1 ½ oz Grey Goose vodka and ½ oz of Elixir to a shaker with ice; shake and strain into a martini glass rimmed with sugar. Garnish your concoction with a lemon twist. (You can also make a virgin version of this drink by combining four parts water to one part elixer, poured over ice.)

Orange Juice to the Rescue!

Juicer

Up your Vitamin C intake with nutrient-rich orange juice. Making your own fresh-squeezed juice at home is easy with The Champion Juicer from Plastaket. For an even simpler fix, try some fresh-squeezed orange juice from Nugget’s Juice Bars. Nothing goes into this juice except for oranges — sweet, healthy and vitamin-rich.

Health Notes from Dr. Liz

Put Some Sunshine Into Your Winter

Dr Liz

Citrus fruit - oranges, tangerines, pomelos, grapefruit, kumquat and other citrus fruits have a wealth of health-boosting nutrients such as vitamin C (50% Daily Value per fruit), fiber and potent cancer-fighting compounds, such as limonene. Some other interesting citrus nutritional properties include:

  • Blood oranges – Their rich red-orange color comes from cancer-fighting compounds like lycopene and cryptoxanthin.
  • Clementines – Tasting just like candy, these little balls of goodness supply vitamin C and folate –¬ a B vitamin crucial for healthy pregnancies and reducing heart disease and cancer risk.
  • Grapefruit – In just under 40 calories, ½ a grapefruit supplies over half of your daily vitamin C needs, some water-soluble fiber along with lycopene (pink varieties) known to ward off prostate cancer.
  • Lemons/limes – these richly flavored citrus fruits contain limonene, a type of flavonoid that has antioxidant properties, which protect the immune system. Use lemon juice and zest in salads, sauces and marinades.
  • Tangerines – Besides supplying a wealth of vitamin C like other citrus fruits, tangerines also contain flavor compounds called terpenes that also have health-boosting properties
