Breakthrough Northern Ireland
Twelve years after the Northern Ireland Assembly was formed to provide stability for the Province, the CSJ has published Breakthrough Northern Ireland, highlighting the need to look beyond the Troubles of the past 40 years and address crippling levels of social breakdown.
Breakthrough Northern Ireland was launched in Belfast on 2 September 2010 with Rt Hon Iain Duncan Smith MP, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions; Rt Hon Owen Patterson MP, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Margaret Ritchie MP MLA, Leader of SDLP; Gavin Poole, CSJ Executive Director; and David Bolton, Director of the Northern Ireland Centre for Trauma and Transformation.
The report paints a grim picture of social breakdown in the Province, marked by high levels of worklessness, family breakdown, mental illness and addiction.
The study also found many instances of outstanding work by volunteers and communities in Northern Ireland from which the rest of the UK can learn, and which place Northern Ireland in a better position to tackle some of the most difficult issues.
