Mayor and Councillor Professional Development

Local Government Act Regulation changes last year mean that all councils are now required to report information in their annual report on the induction and ongoing professional development activities offered to their Mayor and each of their Councillors.

The Blackadder Associates team has developed a comprehensive program for Mayors and Councillors.  This will be of significant benefit to the General Manager in meeting obligations under Section 335 (f) of the Act, as well as for the Mayor and Councillors who now have an obligation under Section 232 (g) of the Act to gain the skills necessary to perform their role. 

At the end of the professional development program Councillors will have participated in a workshop, completed a skills gap refresher survey, had a one on one meeting with Helen Lever or Stephen Blackadder, and be presented with a summary report on outcomes, with a recommended development plan for each Councillor for a 6 to 12 month period, as well as an overall plan for the term of office.

Reminder of Changes to Council Rates 

Recently an amendment to the Local Government Act enabled the Minister to extend the rates path freeze for an additional 12 months for councils formed in 2016. This enables councils more time to consult and talk to their communities about rating  harmonisation.
