Pick of the Weekend

Wine of the Weekend

Michael David Freakshow Cabernet Sauvignon 2014, Lodi, California

If you’re not reading this until Saturday, this is not an April Fools’ joke. We usually recommend wines that are under the $25 mark in order to keep things relatively affordable. This weekend, however, we are going to stretch our limit to $29.95 because we want to recommend this ‘Freakishly’ good Cab from Lodi.  This wine really exists: we promise this is not a prank.

Tasting Notes: Freakshow Cab is remarkably complex on the nose with aromas of dark fruit, chocolate, sandalwood and smoke, with hints of Christmas cake and spice. It’s a full-bodied Cab which is rich and generous on the palate, exuding flavours of dark cherry, brambleberry and mocha laced with smoky spice and oak. The finish is long, smooth and complex. This is a fun wine to drink.

Enjoy With: Grilled red meat, roasted veggie lasagne or authentic barbecue.

Style: Full-bodied and smooth red wine.

Terroir/Region: Lodi is California’s largest wine appellation and home to over 750 different growers and 85 wineries. Located between the San Francisco Bay and the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the region has a classic Mediterranean climate featuring warm days and cool evenings. In 2015, Lodi was named Wine Region of the Year by Wine Enthusiast magazine.

Producer: Michael David (named after brothers Michael and David Phillips) is a 5th generation family-owned and operated farm that is known for its innovative winemaking and marketing. The family is at the forefront of sustainable farming in the Lodi region and has adopted the most progressive practices available. All of the Phillips’ 750 acres of family vineyards have third-party sustainability certification.

Availability: Freakshow Cabernet Sauvignon will be available through Vintages officially on Saturday, but check stores now as some locations have released the wine early.
