Wine of the Weekend

Marqués de Riscal 2016 Rueda DO, Spain

Did you know that June 15th was World Tapas Day? Why not celebrate this Spanish way of enjoying wine and food together this weekend by inviting some of your favourite foodies over for a tapas party? You’ll need a wine that’s been purposely built to match a wide variety of food flavours and textures.  This crisp white from northern Spain will do the trick.

Tasting Notes: This wine is pretty, pale straw in colour. A very attractive nose shows aromas of tropical fruit, melon and lemongrass, complemented by notes of herbs and flowers. This refreshing white has flavours of crisp apple, citrus and herbs on a light to medium-bodied palate that finishes with excellent length and a hint of fennel.

Enjoy With: Any type of tapas and dishes made with seafood, ham, egg, potato, olives, etc.

Style: Light to medium-bodied, crisp, dry white wine.

Terroir/Region: In 1972, Marqués de Riscal began investing in a little known northern Spanish wine region called Rueda, building a state-of-the-art winery where it began to make white wine from the local Verdejo grape. The region received its official DO appellation status in 1980 and is now renowned for its bright, lively white wines.

Producer: Marqués de Riscal is one of the oldest and most respected wineries in Spain. Recently, the winery did a complete overhaul of its winemaking facilities, updating their infrastructure and equipment and even adding a hotel. Canadian born architect Frank Gehry was hired to design the new building and the winery now produces a flagship wine in his honour.
