30 November 2018 updateFirst ASEAN@50 Fellows arrive this weekOur first two ASEAN@50 Fellows, Dr Pavida Pananond and Senthil Danapalan, arrived this week and are busy delivering their programme of briefings and public seminars - pictured here at last night's Dunedin public seminar, with SEA CAPE Director Professor Siah Hwee Ang. The ASEAN@50 Fellowship Programme, run in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, is all about building mutual knowledge and understanding between New Zealand and ASEAN. Pavida is Associate Professor of International Business at Thammasat Business School in Bangkok. Her interest is in the internationalisation of companies and economic upgrading with reference to the emerging markets of the Southeast Asia region. Senthil is Head of Development at Maxis Berhad – a leading Malaysian telecommunications provider. He is a seasoned business executive with significant experience across Asia-Pacific in the technology, telecommunications and airline industries. While in New Zealand, the Fellows are meeting with academics, students, government officials and targeted industry representatives. Their first public seminar was in Dunedin last night. Business-savvy students selected for Tertiary Market Immersion ProgrammeWe are very pleased to announce that 16 students have been selected from across New Zealand tertiary institutions to participate in our Tertiary Market Immersion Programme in January 2019. Travelling to Vietnam, Thailand, and Singapore, the students will work in groups, guided by academic mentors, to develop recommendations to the NZ Inc network on which market has the most potential for New Zealanders looking to do business in Southeast Asia. Each group will focus on a different area including e-commerce, food and beverage, Small Medium Enterprise innovation and social enterprise. Ten students to take up business challenge in SingaporeTen students from secondary schools around the country have been selected to take part in our Business Challenge Programme to Singapore in January 2019. We’ve partnered with Young Enterprise and the New Zealand Chamber of Commerce Singapore to create a week-long experience that exposes young Kiwi entrepreneurs to the opportunities awaiting them outside of school and encourages business connections in Southeast Asia. Māori entrepreneurs exploring opportunities in VietnamThis week five Māori entrepreneurs are in Ho Chi Minh City and Danang to build networks in Vietnam’s entrepreneurship ecosystem and gain an understanding of the business culture and environment. The group are in Vietnam as part of our Accelerate Southeast Asia Programme – run in partnership with the Asia New Zealand Foundation. The Programme is designed to develop global confidence among emerging Kiwi entrepreneurs, highlight opportunities in the region and build strong networks with Southeast Asian entrepreneurs. While in Vietnam, the participants are experiencing a new way of engaging in business and connecting with Vietnamese entrepreneurs who are coming up with innovative ways to tackle challenges in that country. Teachers connect to deepen students’ knowledgeAs part of the pilot for our Global Schools Partnership Project (GSPP), six Singaporean teachers are in New Zealand this week to connect and build lasting relationships with their New Zealand partner teachers. The purpose of the GSSP - run in partnership with the Asia New Zealand Foundation - is to increase students’ interest and study of Southeast Asia by establishing sustainable partnerships between schools in New Zealand and schools in Southeast Asia.
