News

Dr Michael Warne has been invited to give a keynote presentation and chair a session on Marine Pollution and Debris at the The 7th Annual World Congress of Ocean-2018 to be held between Oct. 29-31, 2018 in Qingdao, China.

Dr Michael Warne has been invited to give a presentation at the International Seminar to develop new legislation for Brazil relating to the treatment and use of biosolids on agriculture. The seminar will be held in Belo Horizonte, Brazil on 08-09th May, 2018.

Jonathan Eden attended a two-day workshop on seasonal climate forecasting at Loughborough University. A total of 43 participants from a range of environmental organisations, water agencies and universities contributed to the discussion on meeting the needs of the users of forecast information. Jonathan presented his work on empirical methods for seasonal forecasting, which was also the subject of his seminar last year.

Feeding the Soil to Feed the City!

Concerned by the lack of organic inputs being stocked by garden centres, Julia Wright entered a competition “Feeding the City” with a business idea to create a franchise of stores selling bio-pesticides, bio-fertilisers and organic seeds, as well as appropriate equipment. With the working name of MA-SANTÉ, the business model would be socially-oriented, with surplus funds re-invested into education, training and research.

Organised by the Impact Hub Kings Cross, Feeding the City is a support programme for teams who wish to start up sustainable food businesses that benefit UK communities. Julia Wright’s team was selected as one of 14 to participate in the first stage of the programme, and in February they were awarded a bursary of £1500 to develop their concept, supported through two business training weekends in London and Manchester.

They hope to then be selected for stage two of the programme, where they will be  paired with a mentor, have support to become investment ready and be introduced to investors and also receive a £4000 bursary.

Representation at International Biodynamic Conference

Julia Wright joined over 900 people (mainly farmers) from 46 countries who came together for the Annual International Conference of the Biodynamic Movement, at the Goetheanum, Switzerland. Designed by Rudolf Steiner as the centre of the anthroposophical movement, the Goetheanum was named after Wolfgang von Goethe and is a testament to experimentation with concrete in the early 1900s.  This year’s theme of the conference was The Preparations, which, formulated from specific herbs, cow manure and animal organs, are seen as the heart of biodynamic agriculture in that they build both resilience and vitality and distinguish biodynamics from other forms of sustainable farming.

Another distinguishing feature was that, as well as sessions on farming, the conference programme included meditation, art, movement and music. Julia was there to meet with European research partners to develop a major research funding bid as well as to provide advice and support in the planning of the movement’s first Biodynamic Research Conference which will take place in September of this year.
