Thursday was the summer solstice which means this is the weekend with the most sunlight of the year! That means extra hours for sunbathing, gardening or maybe time on the patio with a glass of wine. This week’s wine is the Goldschild Single Vineyard Riesling Kabinett which is the perfect wine to complement the sunshine with just the right balance of ripe fruit sweetness and bright acidity.
Tasting Note: Lively acidity balances a touch of sweetness and brings juicy qualities to the ripe citrus, green apple, peach and apricot fruit. Touches of petrol and mineral notes add complexity to this wine and its lower than average alcohol content make it easy to enjoy as a summer sipper or with other wine-savvy friends.
Enjoy With: Summer salads, a must for spicy Thai dishes, and refreshing with sausages, grilled chicken or pork.
Style: A well-balanced, off-dry, and medium-bodied white wine.
Terroir / Region: The Mosel valley is an example of a place that is exactly suited for a particular grape, in this case, Riesling. The slate soils hold the heat of the day’s sunlight and radiate it back onto the grapes through the night, helping the slow ripening process and building complexity and balance in the region’s wines. The river valley itself is framed by steep (60 degrees in some places) valley walls and the aspect gives vines extra sunlight due to their excellent ‘view’ of the sun. Add all that together and the result is perfect Riesling!
Producer: Goldschild Riesling Kabinett is made by the Moselland co-operative, based in the Mosel river valley. In 1968, a group of local growers joined together to become the largest co-op in the region and it has since grown into the world’s largest producer of Riesling. At this size, Moselland has many locations to pick from to make its Goldschild Single Vineyard Riesling and the vineyard changes from year to year based on the best vintage conditions and quality fruit.
