River Otter

River Otter Pups Make a Splash at the Zoo

Watch our North American river otter pups – Slyde, Emmy and Bobby – make a splash at the Edward Mardigian Sr. River Otter Exhibit. For the first time in nearly 50 years, the Detroit Zoo is celebrating the birth of North American river otters. Born in late March, the three playful pups can now be seen showing off their newfound aquatic skills at the Detroit Zoo's Edward Mardigian Sr. River Otter Habitat. Brothers Slyde and Bobby and sister Emmy doubled the population of the Zoo's river otters, which also includes their mother Whisker, 9, father Lucius, 6, and 11-year-old female Stormy. Learn More.

Meet your Zoo's residents

Four African slender-snouted crocodiles – two pairs of brothers – arrived from Zoo Miami.  There are only 31 recorded African slender-snouted crocodiles in U.S. zoos.  The Detroit Zoo is one of 11 zoos to care for the species, which was last seen here more than 40 years ago.

Hail to our newest wolverine, Anna … welcome to the Wolverine State! Anna's arrival May 10 from the Minnesota Zoo is part of a cooperative breeding agreement to jump start the captive population of wolverines. There are currently less than 50 individuals in accredited U.S. zoos.
