Wine of the Weekend

Monte Zovo Sa’ Solin Valpolicella Ripasso Superiore

This week we’re highlighting Monte Zovo Sa’ Solin Ripasso Superiore because, well… it’s just really good. No big theme this week, no event or ‘wine day’, just a killer bottle of wine. It’s versatile on the dinner table and very easy drinking on its own. It’s beautiful to open now and can age gracefully for a few years if you’re the patient type. It also happens to be $2.00 off right now, a situation worth taking advantage of.

Tasting Notes: Sa’ Solin Valpolicella Ripasso is full of bright red cherry and raspberry, plum and prune fruit. Accents of dried herbs, leather and spice, even touches of stone and minerality, appear throughout. The acidity is perfectly balanced to the weight of the fruit as it draws over a long finish.

Enjoy With: Grilled red meats and sausages, pasta in red sauces like lasagna, and aged hard cheeses. This is also a charcuterie board’s best friend, and an amazing wine to savour on its own, just sitting back and enjoying its nuances.

Style: A soft, medium-bodied, juicy red wine.

Terroir/Region: The Valpolicella region of Italy created a style all its own with Ripasso, using the region’s recipe of blending Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara grapes. The grape skins and stems remaining after making Amarone wine are added to a vat of grape juice as it begins to ferment. Once fermentation is complete, the wine is pressed and filtered normally, taking it from a light, fruity Valpolicella wine to a more dense, rich and flavourful sip.

Producer: Monte Zovo is owned and operated by the Cottini family and Sa’ Solin stands as one of its most important wines. The fruit for it comes from high altitude vineyards the family owns and takes great pride in. Sa’ Solin is named after the small rock fragments and stones found in the vineyard that help drainage and make it such a special site.
